So I just got my stove last spring and was pretty much down to only a few splits of my good stuff. $$$ is low until the end of the month, and I was wracking my brain trying to figure out how to keep burning and avoid the furnace. I have enough oil for backup burning, but would have to get a delivery of oil if it were a primary heat source. Even if I had the cash to buy wood right now, it would all be green.

It turns out that Dave, Captain Hornet https://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/forums/cost/12148/ , lives relatively close to me and has gotten pretty far ahead on his wood piles. He hand splits all this beautiful hardwood right from his property. We are forecast to get a snowstorm this weekend, so he invited me down after work yesterday to fill my truck with wood-promising more as needed and we can work out the details when I get paid.

My son and I really enjoyed meeting Dave and his lovely, funny, smart wife. They have a seriously beautiful property, and seriously beautiful wood stacks. Did I mention that he hand split it all! I even got a look at the monster stove. I could fit about four of my stoves in that beauty. We look forward to the next visit, as they have promised other fun activites around the place ;)

As you all know, even if you have enough wood to last a decade, you still hate to part with any of it given the hard work involved. Hopefully today he is not sitting in a corner mumbling about his precious babies!

Neighbors helping Neighbors. Awesome !!!

Rather than grumbling in a corner, I'll bet he went to bed last night feeling pretty darn good! Time to bake up something REALLY yummy! Cheers!

I bet it hurt a little putting it in the truck, but now that you've driven away I am sure he's glad he could help out.

Kathleen, that sounds great! Congratulations to you and a big thank you goes out to Dave! Maybe even an atta boy or two. lol It is great when we can help others.

Awesome!

Sounds similar to Dennis helping me out at the end of last season. He didn't need to do it and I didn't need to burn wood BUT we all know it's hard to beat that wood heat.

Its nice to read such a good story.
Dave, that is really nice of you man.

thats really cool, i mean warm, you know what i mean. pete

Reminds me of a story an LDS friend of mine told: she said that when the principle of stockpiling a two-year supply of family's needs (food, fuel, etc.) was being introduced to a congregation, one man asked, "What if we get more than two years' supply ahead? Does that mean that in a time of hardship, we'd have to share with others?" And the reply came, "No, it means you'd get to share with others."

It's a fine thing that they did, and in sharing this, you've created an enduring reminder to us all of their generous example. To share abundance with others is a pebble in a pond--the ripples just keep spreading. And none of us created trees, right? Even if we pay for them in sweat or dollars, they're still a priceless gift to us; we just forget that because of their abundance--an irony, that.

Of course, the fact that yer purty, Kathleen, made it easier for him to offer in the first place ;-)

I've yet to have anyone need wood from me, but if I did and the person was appreciative, I'd do it.

Now, about that baking something . . . :cheese: :cheese: :cheese:

Meh. It's the internet. For all Dave knew he could have actually been inviting a big ugly hairy ape of a man over to his house.

Kudos to the Captain . . .

And in the same vein . . . I've found the folks here at hearth.com truly are some fantastic and giving folks . . . it really is like a network of friends and neighbors . . . it was a bit moving a year or so ago to see so many people come together with donations of time and money for one of our own was severely hurt while cutting down a tree . . . and I know of at least a few other members who have helped other members out with a donation of firewood or time to help them weather the winter. This truly is a special forum.
