Hey, y'all! I'm here for help on a dilemma that we've had for a few years. We've lived in our house for 13 years now. After a tree fell on the chimney, the previous owners replaced it, and put in a wood burning stove. Our first winter was hot in the living room, but cold in the rest of the house. We removed the wood stove, and installed a propane furnace.

Now that our children are older and I don't have to worry about them getting too close, we'd really like to use our fireplace. My husband just put a mirror into the hole to see if we had a flue. There is nothing in there, but a big pipe for the smoke to vent.

Is it possible to open this thing up? Is this enough information for y'all to help me?

Thank you for any assistance and advice you can give us.

Have someone check it out.

Knowing nothing about fireplaces, I'm not even sure who to ask. Would a chimney sweep be able to check it out for me?

In the words of Julie Andrews, "That's a very good place to start...."

Post some good pictures and I can offer advice. But sooner or later you will need someone to come out there. A chimney sweep, fireplace pro, or mason might be who you need or able to point you to the person you need.

Did you say you burned wood in a stove connected to the chimney you are talking about until you removed the stove? You might be seeing a liner that was installed by the previous owner.
btuser had it right when he said have someone check it out.
