My son lives in Austin, Texas and I live in the Houston area. Last night, they put the temp on 68. They use gas. We use an Avalon Insert (at my place). We keep it in 78 - 80. I went last night to visit. I was FREEZING there and I was so happy to get home so we see the fire and see my pretty wife and is so warm. The only regret I only have is I wanted so long to get my insert.

Robert

Must be a southern thing, I get hot at 70. I regulate my insert to keep the house around 66-68. The good thing is, if you like heat the stove cranks it for you and it doesn't run up the bill. My parents have a heat pump/electric back-up and they think my house is always warm even though their thermostat is set at 71

Everyone I work with work dreads it when the temperature consistently drops into the teens-like it has this year and the last. Heat pumps don't do well and gas heat gets kinda pricey. At work, whenever we talk about cold weather arriving, I usually chuckle or smile. They know why.

Robert, I'm with you. I keep my thermostat at about 78 in the summer for the AC and when I heat with wood, 81 or so is comfortable to me. But, I wear shorts and a t-shirt inside.

robert,

We can sympathize with you - we have told family and friends we might visit them for an hour or so but we won't visit out of town during the winter as we suffer from "WSW" (Wood Stove Withdrawal). :)

My wife and I are the same way, No matter how warm someone else's house is, we're cold. Wood heat is so much different than any other. It really sticks with you too. I notice when I go outside for a smoke I don't get as cold for that short time.

Sure thing, just try to explain to someone who does not burn wood. The heat is down to the bone and some times through! :)

A few weeks ago I had to go somewhere and was gone for a couple of hours. When I came home I found that my wife had a few of her girlfriends over for lunch. One of them, the hot one, said ' I wore this t-shirt cause I knew it would be warm in here.' Then my wife yelled from the kitchen, ' Make sure you call before you come over in July and he'll let you know if the air conditioner is working.' Man, I love that woman.

Anytime we have a neighborhood party in the winter the neighbors always come and tell us "We wore less because we knew how warm your house would be". Neighbors cannot believe how much a stove in the basement with an open door can heat our whole house!

Robert, I can certainly believe it. We go through the same thing whenever we go to visit someone. We dress heavy at those times. lol Long johns and all.

Another thing I have a hard time believing is how some folks claim to keep their homes in the 60's and are still hot. Yet, come summer those folks want the temperature well over 80 outside. That is difficult for me to understand. For sure if one is working it is nice to have it cooler but not when relaxing in one's den or living room. Sorry, I want my house to be comfortable.

Is it just me or does a well insulated house "feel" warmer at a lower temp. My house dont feel warm until it gets to 76. I just finished a well insulated house to rent and im comfortable there in the 60s.

I regret not getting a stove sooner and not finding this site sooner too. Would've saved me much heart ache. I agree with others about visiting too. The only place I don't wear longjohns in the winter is home and the gym.

When we visit friends, we usually freeze for a while at their houses, then make excuses about how we need to get home to put some wood in the stove before it goes out :)

We stayed a couple days at a friend's house a couple weeks back and by the second day I couldn't take it anymore and put on my winter jacket in their house. They asked if I was going somewhere? I just told them I'm use to our wood heat,,,, they knew what exactly what I was talking about.

Trump, for sure a well insulated house will "feel" warmer,,, it's because a well insulated house is usually sealed better (no draft). Even a small leak somewhere in the vapor barrier (eg. outside wall electrical box, poorly sealed windows) can create a strong draft.

The only regret I have is that I have one stove to burn for my family! :) Well, two, but no one wants to go sit in the greenhouse on a cold night.
