Newbie PIPER complained recently that:
"But the ratings page on this website did not have too much nice to say about the Montpelier or the Clydesdale ." and BeGreen replied:
"I see 3 ratings of the Clydesdale in the review section, all are positive, which I would say also reflects the general response on this insert. It’s a good unit."

There are only 3 ratings and these ratings are for the older model 8490.
During my research for a wood insert these ratings did not make up for negative reviews on the “gardenweb.com†site.

I am guessing that there are about fifty Clydesdale burners on this forum, but for some reasons we are reluctant to rate the Clydesdale. I just added my rating – the first one for new model 8491. (https://www.hearth.com/ratings/search.php)

Have a Happy, Healthy New Year and a Happy Burning!

Keep Warm,

We are getting ready to put stone over our exisiting brick fireplace before we install our Clydesdale. Everyone wants use to take the stone work to the edge of the surround as opposed to putting the surround over top of a small section of the stone...It looks like your surround is over the stone...how does it look and did you need to run a lot of morter around it?

Thanks

Thanks for the nice post. With the popularity of the forums, the other sections have lagged. I'll try to remember to ask new stove owners to post in the ratings section about their stoves.

KeepWarm,

Despite some of the negative reviews on the older Clydesdale, I recently purchased the newer model and despite an all-day power outage, installed it on Saturday. . . . I love it!!
It does exactally what I expected. I have only had a few oak logs in it at a time and it heats my 2300sf ranch efficiently. My main living area stays about 75 degrees and the bedrooms about 67degrees. I am still learning about operating the beast, but as long as it is putting out that kind of heat I will stay happy. It is about 20 degrees outside and we got our first snow of the year today. I am one happy camper. If it gets much colder I can always throw some hedge in it and really get some heat ;)

We love ours. It is 15 degrees outside and I am sitting in the living room in a T shirt and shorts. Furnace hasn't run all day! Check out our install at http://www.thegratehaus.com/ about half way down the page. They did a great job with the stone.

Actually I just did after posting. Forgot all about the ratings...so excited about the new stove.

Thanks! Enjoy that new insert!

BeGreen, thank you for posting reminders.
The Rating entry form should be updated. I was not able to enter correct stove’s purchase year.
The drop-down list box shows years from 1996 to 2009. I have reported it to Craig (Webmaster).
'Make Fire' wisely stated correct year in the review section.

PIPER and 'Make Fire', my very warm welcome to the Clydesdale family.

JoeRJGR, our Clydesdale surround is installed inside of the fireplace opening. We could not install surround over the stones because the stones are very rough. BTW, for this reason the Clydesdale finally won over Hampton HI300. :).
Please see attached picture. There are small gaps between stones and the surround.

Hope you took a moment to fill out a stove rating form here:

No worries guys. I will post my install and my review soon.

Meanwhile, I am choosing a new chainsaw and getting ready to stockpile wood for next year.

It may be worthy of a new post, but I am trying to choose between STIHL, HUSQVARNA, and JONSERED. I'm cutting mainly Hedge (orange osage). Just enough to heat the house. I have no idea how much wood that would be. :S

You should probably start a new thread in the "Gear" section...this is for woodstove discussion. You'll find a lot of reading material there already on chainsaw choices.

Uhhmm. . ya. Still learning.

What a fount of information this site is. I am continually impressed. I could not have completed the install without the Hearth Room and look forward to reading about chainsaws in the Gear forums.

Thanks Dan.
