By my calculations, today is approximately the halfway point in degree-days. If you still have half your wood pile, then celebrate!

For me, the second half is usually less actual heating load because the sun angles are better and the days are longer.

Just over 1/2 of the woodpile remaining, looks like it will be a good winter. Now let's get back to work splitting for 2012/13.

It is a time to celebrate, although the 2nd half of January is usually the coldest spell we have, and the temps are right on track this coming week to head into the -20'sF, possibly with some days never getting above 0F.

Here is the color of happiness -- record of Jan 1 - 15, burning every other day. Life is good when you're heating with wood.

Just had this conversation, my pile may not make it 6 more weeks. I am still cutting for 2011!

nope looks like im gonna be short. im hoping my switch to 100% radiant will increase my mpg though.

Ya looks like some cold temps coming soon, yuk

While I don't believe in superstion or fate and any such thangs, I do believe it's not wise to brag about stuff that has just worked out well.

But I can say that, in spite of this being the coldest of the past 3 years so far, it has been the BEST year yet with the GW and wood heating here.

In summary,

I have more wood now than when I started the fire Oct 31,2010; and
I only ran oil for about 3 hours while the GW cooled down from a power outage

:cheese:

That statement right there will tell you something about the operation of a wood burner if you think about it a little.

I will be close on wood. Have a couple days off this week and I will be cutting. Burrr 6 deg F this morn. Not as cold as some have it ,but plenty cold for me. Just finished insulating shop last night !

Wood supply is good. Burned a little over 2 cords so far, 5 cords still available for this year, and another 4-2/3 cords put up last summer for the future.

Cold and lonely, but a warm heart ...

Had it just figured right . 2 weeks in Florida with oil keeping house from freezing and my wood will more than last till late spring, maybe a cord left over for next season.

The Sun is a wonderful thing! Having lots of south-facing windows, yesterday the boiler was shut down for 4 hours, and today it will probably be 5, with outside temps 20-25. And as far as the firewood supply goes, I don't worry about it anymore, because I'm a couple years ahead now. For anyone who struggles with being on the edge every year, I would urge you to go all-out and bust tail this coming year to get ahead. Work like you're on a slave ship, and put every spare moment that you can into it. Because once you get ahead, then you can back off and just do the same amount of work you've been doing all along. It's a great feeling, and lets you be much more relaxed about the whole firewood thing. Well, enough preaching - time to go out and cut a little bit of wood - for 2013.

I used 2 cords so far this year. I have 5 left that is dry at 16% mc. I am on par at 4 cords for the year. Last year I used 3 1/2 cords. Not a hard winter last year and this year we keep the house warmer.

In good shape here....probably only about 25% of the wood we had for this heating season is gone.
Told my brother in law that this is the mid point and he replied "is that all!!??"....of course, he's not a happy camper since he's still on fossil fuel.
