hey all,.... well went to check out my local woodstove store and heres what he had, please give me some info if you have experiance with either one of these,.... or just have heard of anything about them,..... Im leaning towards one brand, but i dont want to influance you............ here we go,.....
......appalachian woodstove,....32 xlbw..... its a cat stove, comes with a 300 cfm blower on it, claims to heat 1500-2500 square ft
he would like 2000.00 for that... it claims to heat 1000-2200 square ft

...... next up is a enviro KODIAK 1700 step top ,.... has a slightly larger FB capacity than the app, and is a non cat stove.... he is asking 1550 for that.....it claims to heat 1000-2200 square ft

I am going to be heating 1760 sq ft,ranch , and the stove will be going on the main floor .... he also suggests i do a straight through the ceiling(cathedral) vent for either,.... i can do both.... direct or through wall chimneys....

Go with the cat and don't look back.

Go with the non-cat and don't look back.

Seriously, about all I can contribute is that everybody that has passed through here that owns the Enviro loves it. If the local dealer hadn't lied and said he wasn't a dealer for them, because he had a warehouse full of Buck Stoves he wanted to sell, I would have one right now.

Burn tube secondary are good for what..2 maybe 3 hours of a fire show?
The cat can be doing it's thing for way longer and still give a decent light show if you know how to force it.
Can burn tubes get 40 hours out of a load in 30-40°F weather..I didn't think so.
But to each their own...what works for some may not for others..I understand that.

What temps do you maintain with those times? i am considering a BK for my next stove, as i need longer burn times with usable heat.

When I'm running as low as I can it's usually around 350 or a little lower..depends on the wood and how much I load her.
This stove freaked me out at first.
I kept trying to reload it the way I did the old non-cat Bk and she just was not hungry...no comparison.
Any decent cat stove with a big box is going to give you a way longer burn time over a tube secondary...that is a fact.
If you want fast heat ups and just run part time a tube stove might be better for some.
Had a fairly cold week here..0 to maybe around 20-25 F..I loaded at 6 in the morning..around 2/3...then I would rake the coals forward a few times from 6 at night till maybe 8..run full air to burn those down..then throw some wood in and start over at 6 the next morning.
I go 3 weeks easy between cleaning out the ash.

What does that have to do with the OP's question about the Appalachian vs. the Enviro? Appalachian advertises a 16 hour burn time. They talk about heating your house. Not brooding baby chicks. :coolsmirk:

I like the looks of the Kodiak over the App but I like the way cat stoves heat over non cats. Tough decision, flip a coin or keep lookin.

Does anyone know how well the App cat is made or performs? I think that is the question. All cats are not created equal. I have to agree with BB that Enviro's seem to generate positive reports and happy owners. We do have a couple Appalachian 32 owners on board. I changed the the post title to Appalachian 32xlbw vs Enviro Kodiak 1700 if that is the actual question. It will generate more responses from owners of those stoves.

crackshot, I have the appalachian trailmaster 4N1 model and it has really been a good stove for me. It's an older cat model that I've burned alot of wood through in 12 yrs. of 24/7 burning. As far as maintenance, i've changed the catalysts twice since i've had it, but I bought the stove used so I don't know when or if the previous owner had changed them. Don't know anything about the kodiak, but if it were me, I would go with the cat stove but I know that goes back and forth on here all the time, just my personal oppinion. Anyway, as an Appalachian owner, I would definately recommend it.

thanks guys, I think I am going with the enviro 2100,.... for the larger box ...... I have the hearth and the stove all layed out where its gonna go,..... plumbed down from the ceiling,.... its gonna look good, im gonna put in a raised hearth...... should be under way in late feb. early march..... I cant wait to get her done.... i hope we have a late spring here so i can se how she does! lol
