Boring, Oregon
This is my new T5, burned the first fire in October this season. I grew up burning with wood and feel comfortable for the most part. The only thin that worries me is when I'm not around for extended time and the rest of the family is in charge of the stove. My wife tends to defer the duties to my two boys 12 and 15. Smart kids, responsible, and good learners. So, my goal was to have a more definitive way of explaining the different stages of a fire to the boys. And have a hard, fast rule for when the stove gets turned down. Nothing against the stove top thermometers, just didn't work great for me with the T5.
This is perfect. Inexpensive, clean and accurate.

If you can get a thermocouple to stand on end without falling over, great idea.

Its hard to tell from the pic but the thermocouple is pinned under part of the trivet top. Works great on a Alderlea, probably need a horse shoe magnet for other stoves.

Hey Tuna Fish:

Brilliant idea with the thermocouple. Rhetorical question: Are there any stoves out there that provide this feature as an option. I don't know...

With wood stove thermometers the present situation is like pick-up trucks and trailer hitches of years gone by. Years ago, you could not buy a factory installed trailer hitch on a PU truck. I mean who would want to tow something with a PU truck? Duh... Now a tow hitch and wiring harness is factory standard or a factory option on most units.

I see alot of discussion about stove thermometers on Hearth.com. Like what type of thermometer to buy, where to install them on the stove or pipe, and what the temperatures mean. Isn't about time that stove manufacturers start putting thermometers on their units - and explaining how to use them. What's the story here anyway???

To conclude: nice job with the thermocouple install. I'm guessing that you must be in the tech industry.

Tech industry, No. Just a dumb commercial fisherman by summer and unemployed General Contactor the rest of the season. Super easy to install, the hardest part is getting power to the temp controller but if you have an outlet nearby its easy. I had one on the other side of the wall in the same stud cavity where I put the controller, so all I had to do was fish a wire from the outlet up to the controller.

Volemister, I have no idea why the industry doesn't provide thermometers. But if I had to guess, it would have something to do with liability.

Lighting up, I got it off ebay. Wood Stove Thermocouple. Think I paid $120
