so I've been thinking about getting chaps.
Today I was out splitting wood and the fiskers sliped and hit the front of my shin. I didn't realize it till I was back in the house a notice blood running down my leg. I got a 1.5 inch cut. Not a big deal. But makes me wonder if wearing chaps while splitting would help prevent a trip to the er someday.

so what ppe do you wear while splitting.

I don't know if chaps would help. I got some for Christmas, but apparently they are designed to shred and "choke" a chainsaw. Whether or not they'd stop a Fiskars, I don't know. If so, I'll wear them, but I didn't see anything in the ads suggesting that they would (I have a Fiskars and get cold chills, just thinking about that sucker headed for my shin.)

I wear them cutting 99% of the time, I saw what a chainsaw will do it a fellow its pretty ugly! As far as spliting don't think they would help a lot I have had a few pieces kick out and it sure leaves a mark and does sting. I suppose knee and shin guards would be an opition to wear and always wear safety glasses and decent leather gloves.

Would give some padding and lessen the cut but thats about it. Catcher's shin guards would do the job.

I actually wear the soccer shin guards almost all the time due to a injury last summer.A shin injury has a hard time healing due to the shortage of muscle and thus blood.

I think the OP was asking about chaps for splitting, not for using a chainsaw (which is, of course, a must).

oh, right... sorry for wasting space on the page, lol

Hmm chainmail pants are probably about the only thing thats going to stop that!

Yup, in HS I cut my shin clear to the bone. Almost had to have a skin-graft because the skin is so thin and tight on the shin that it doesn't heal very well.

I hate to admit it, the only PPE I use when splitting is glasses and boots. But I have thought about shin guards or something. A buddy of mine nearly got all the way to his foot with his SS, second swing from new. Ruined a pair of shoes.
