Have you ever put a couple of perfectly dry looking splits on the fire, only to see moisture coming out the ends of perfectly "seasoned" wood? Did you re-split and use a moisture meter and find the wood is at 20% MC, but still won't burn right in your EPA stove? Are they blackened and cracked at the ends, feel light in the hand, and issue a bright sound rather than a dull thud when struck together, but still just sizzle and hiss when you place them on the coals? Well, suffer no more. Introducing, new Last Wordâ„¢ moisture content indicators... the "last word" in firewood moisture detection.

After working on this project for nearly seven years, we've finally perfected a foolproof moisture content detection devise. Based on the same principles used in "pop-up" poultry timers, we have recently found a way to make these things work by detecting moisture in firewood rather than temperature. A hygroscopic crystalline substance fills the plunger chamber and holds the plunger firmly in place. As the wood dries, the water is slowly removed from the filler, allowing it to shrink. At precisely 20% MC, the filler has shrunken enough for the spring to pop the plunger out. Bing! Wood is done, dude.

Installation couldn't be any easier. As each piece comes off the splitter, just carry it inside and drill a 1/8" hole at 90º to the end cut. A drill press is very helpful in getting this hole at the correct angle. Then, using the special setting tool that comes with the kit, place the detector tip into the hole, put the setting tool on the top flange of the indicator, and give 8-10 firm taps with a hammer. Carry it back outside, place it on the stack, and then on to the next one. What could be easier?

As drying proceeds, you will see the Last Wordâ„¢ indicators starting to pop here and there. When they are about 50% popped up, go through the stacks and separate the done pieces from the ones that need more time. Then remove the indicators from the done pieces and re-stack under cover to maintain the quality of the firewood. And don't forget to save those indicators - they can be reused up to three times using our proprietary filler compounds and our handy refilling tool kit.

We expect to come to market with these by the spring cutting season.* Estimated cost will be $300/1000, but if you pre-pay now, we will include a free case of our PowerPine firestarters with your order. So, why be in doubt about the quality of your firewood? Stop splitting and re-splitting those splits and toss out that unreliable moisture meter - have the last word on firewood quality with our new Last Wordâ„¢ moisture indicators.

*At the present, we only have indicators that pop up precisely at 20%, but we are currently working furiously on developing different filler compositions for different desired moisture contents. So, if you really believe "the drier the wood, the better the burn", we soon hope to have Last Word indicators in 15%, 10%, 5%, and for the guy or gal who just isn't satisfied with mere "Bowels Of Hell" secondaries, we will have the "Sahara" version, which will only pop up when the moisture content drops below 1% MC.

WOW! those sound great.
Perhaps you could market those along with my new "Flame Exciters" rare Earth magnets I'm developing. Put two of these "Flame Exciter" heat resistant magnets on either side of your wood stove and they will create a magnetic field that surrounds your combustion chamber, organizing and exciting the flames in your fire box so that you get super efficient combustion, with savings up to 50% on your wood fuel consumption.
Limited inventory and selling fast, so order now while supplies last.

Um so these measure the moisture at the end of the indicator? So I am guessing you are measuring the moisture at about what, an inch or so from the cut end ?

Uh.... yeah.... but they're, uh.... calibrated... yeah... calibrated to indicate the proper percentage by interpolation from the end-grain MC. Yeah... that's the ticket.

I really shoulda waited until April 1 for this, but I'm bored now so I jumped the gun by a few months.

You had me till the 3rd paragraph. hehehehe

Sorry, seems like a lot of work to me....Drilling each piece of wood with a drill press, having to refill each one of those for re-use.

To bad they dont come in the color red. Couldnt see the little things in the snow.

The magnet idea has to be dangerous on the firebox as it would align all the gasoline in a north/south direction, but if you had one for the chimney pipe, think of the drafting possibilities.

Are they available in Pink? Can I order both products from one source? Franchises?

I'm working on a "Last Word" gun, similar to a nail gun, that will fire the indicators into the wood. The gun will come with cartridges and re-usable targets, so that you can stack the wood, apply the targets, step back, and fire away! I expect there'll be regional competitions as more users become familiar with the product.

You mean the USB powered one? Somebody already stole that idea from me. I was smart this time and applied for a patent. %-P

Very cool,

I first thought they were cork board thumb tacks & they were targets.

Then I read it, & now am trying to figure a way to get my drill press out to the wood shed & center the splits & drill horizontal, BUT; I'm a vertical splitter guy ??.

Now when you get the "pre-drill & auto feed" jig that attaches to log splitters, so they're in-place when fall off the splitter, you'll be famous.

They need to be made of non-reactive materials so they don't damage the catalytic combustors. (but I'm sure you got that already.)

I believe you have something there, do they work at -30°f ?

PS: I re-use the turkey ones, for my stack temp probes, but they keep melting ??? :) I recycle when I can.

Carbon_Liberator
I already use the "flame exciter magnet method", but I do it with an electro magnetic field coil, buried in the rock hearth behind the stove, sorry.
When adjusted to full power; it dries the wood as it passes through the stove door, so I may not need Battenkiller's moisture detectors.

Cabin fever must be an airborne virus now.

I don't think drilling the holes is necessary. Just fill your rifle with buckshot and take target practice against your wood stacks. Then just fill the holes with the Last Wordâ„¢ indicators.

I just recieved my first order.......
when i opened the package in the house
they all popped open, flying all over the kitchen
guess its to dry in the house with the stove running

The instructions inside the box clearly say not to open the box in dry conditions.

In fact, it clearly states on the back of the box not to open the box until you have read and understood the enclosed instructions.

It does? Really? Oh, wait... there it is, right under the disclaimer clause.

i think ill just keep drying my wood for 2 or 3 or 4 years ahead so i dont have to do that. but to each his own. now maybe but 2 or 3 on each stack to what the a couple of pieces are on the stack.
