Weare, NH
my wife noticed last week that since we
Installed our stove she has noticed
A thin layer of soot on everything.
I was using an old electrolux vac to clean the stove
But have since switched to a small shop vac
With filtration. I also pulled the convection blower
and gave that a good cleaning. I think the problem is
Gone, but she is not convinced.
I explained that we have a oak, and
The exhaust goes outside too.
I've already checked the gaskets, and no leaks.
The only other thing I can think of is to pull the
Combustion blower and give it a good cleaning.
What do you think ?

Your old electrolux is most likely the culprit. Now that you've switched to a "ash" vac you should be good.

Also - I'd had a big problem w/pellet dust around the house from dumping the bags into the hopper. This year I've been using a pellet vacuum setup to clean them down in the garage, and that has cut the dust WAY down.

I'm inclined to agree.

Any other thoughts ?

I'd agree the sucker is blowing stuff out of it! Got to use a drywall, fine dust or Hepa filter to control this issue! Been there-done that!

Make sure the connections on your exhaust vent are sealed tight. I had this dust problem for a long time but it disappeared when I taped the vent pipe connections.

Where can I get one those filters ?
I have the one that came with the shop vac
Installed, but I think a fine particulite
Filter will make the wife happy.

Good tip, my exhaust is currently sealed with
High temp silicone, and I dont feel any draft.

ELECTROLUX. dont like fine dust.. they suck there the bag , so anything fine goes straight there the machine and out the exhaust.I tried picking up drywall dust one time, big mistake.. hepa is the way too go..
i bought a ash vac at sears, cleva brand.. works well.

Feel? No! You want to check it with the lights dim. Use a bright light and when the stove is just starting. If you see wisps of smoke. You got a leak. It probably woundn't soot the house but you might get smoke smells from it!

Same place you bought the vac, Ask for the Hepa. It last the longest. Once in a while I take it outside and tap it against a hard surface to beat the stuff off. I get 3 seasons from mine.

The stock filter isn't enough to keep down the dust. Hepa, Fine particle or drywall filters are the ticket!

I have tried the fine particle filter in my shop vac and still had problems with debris settling on furniture, so I got a Loveless Ash Vac, its made just for ash pickup. They are very expensive, but I never need to replace the filter, it has a rod that you shake to get ash off the filter, and the unit holds almost a full season of ashes.

Hepa filters are good, but you'll need to clean that filter off periodically or it will jam with ash material.

in addition to the better filter you can also buy another shop vac hose put it on the exhaust end of the vacuum and stick it out the window.
Of course this only will work if you have a window near the stove

I buy 1 pack of drywall bags for my shop-vac for $15 or so and they get me through the winter 10-12 gal size they work well and you dont need to clean them. I have 2 stoves to maintain
