We will need to order some more pellets shortly since we are about to run out and I was wondering if anyone in the Southern NH or Northern MA area can suggest any good pellets. We are currently using Cubex and there is so much ash in them! My parents used them last year and said they were awesome but this year not so much. They are having the same problem with them this year too.

So last night we went to the tractor supply store and bought a bag of instant heat and lignetics to try. Also saw on woodpellets.com they have LG which I have heard good stuff about. Seems as though the hamer hot ones are good too with some stuff I have been reading but I can't find them! If you have a brand you really like can you please mention where you got it so I can try them out? Thanks!

Stove Keepers on Rte 13 in Brookline NH has New England Wood Pellets from Jaffrey, NH for $254 a ton. I bought a Harman P35i Insert from them and have been burning the New England Wood Pellets in it this season, and I like them. Very little sawdust, low ash, clean burning. New England Wood Pellets are a 80% hardwood, 20% softwood mix. They are also made locally, in Jaffrey New Hampshire which I like because that means less fossil fuels to transport them.

Stove Keepers also sells another brand named Black Bear, from Canada I believe. These are 100% hardwood, and a bit more expensive as I recall. Don't know an exact price on those.

Yea I haven't heard too many good comments about the freedom pellets so I won't even bother trying those. I just put the bag of oakies in about 10 mins ago so hopefully they will work great. I still have to try the other 2 bags I bought at tractor supply too.

How have those Oakies worked out for you, Meg? Btw, what kind of stove do you have? Every stove is different.

I have used Cubex a few times this year for the first time. I can't compare to past years, but for me they burn pretty well and not too much ash. The only problem though (and this would be specific to the Quad Mt Vernon AE) is that every once in a while, a decent sized clinker forms in the firepot and it seems to get "stuck" and doesn't fall into the ash pan during the autoclean cycle. I have to shut the stove down, let it cool a little, stir up the pot to loosen the clinker, then pull the plug from the wall to force the "autoclean" cycle again. Kind of annoying. But the overall amount of ash/clinker material from the Cubex is actually not too bad.

Well I have found that the oakies didn't have much heat to them.......which I found odd since everyone here raves about how much heat they produce! Maybe I got bad bags? I have a quad 1200 insert. The curran weren't hot at all! They also smelled funny......couldn't put my finger on exactly what they smell like until I read another post saying they smelled like burning crayons and that was it! Lol, won't be getting these! Today I think were going to throw the bag of Maine choice I think it's called in and see how they go. If not then we will probably get the instant heat from TSC in Merrimack. They gave good heat and not much ash.

Funny you mentioned how they moved the pellets in Home Depot to the wood part too. I went there the other day and couldn't see any so I left. Lol. Maybe I'll go back in a few days to see what they have! At least I know where to find them now : )

Epping NH, Lowes, had Green Team and Maine's Choice. Looked like they had at least 5-6 tons of each wrapped and stacked outside, but that's only a guess. There could be more or less. $4.18/bag for either.

Home and Hearth in Hampton Falls had Okanagans recently. I don't know what they are asking for them but a phone call might be worth your while.

Last time I was there they wanted $269/ton, same for Vermonts

Going on a pellet hunt today, will try Lowe's first as they are the close by, I will only purchase Green Team from them, Will not purchase Maines Coice or Curran's.
My wife brought home a few bags of penningtons last week from Walmart $5.00 per bag and they put out good heat and average ash.
I do recall a few years back people had issues with them but they appear fine this year.
Not sure what HD is selling in Rochester or Somersworth?

That is odd about the low heat. Perhaps some experimentation with stove settings. They are 100% softwood where most other pellets on the market are hard/soft blends of some proportion. I have a Mt Vernon insert, not a 1200. They are very different so I don't have any suggestion for you on settings. Perhaps someone else does.
