Since we already have another active thread on this I figured I'd add in my experience.

I have three tree's that I need to have put on the ground. Two are within 15' of the neighbors and one is on a power line that runs through my property. I was quoted 400 to have all three dropped. This is just putting them on the ground with no clean up. Two will probably need to be climbed, the other one is an easy drop that I could do but I'd rather not screw up and drop it on the neighbors house.

I gave them the ok to do it so I'll let you know how it goes when they're down.

If it's a threat to the utility delivery, the power company should (pay to have a pro) take it down. Then offer them casholla while they're there, their equipment is already running.

Unfortunately it's out of the power companies right of way so I'm out of luck. They'd rather it fall and clean up the mess after. I'd rather not lose power if it goes down so I figured I'd take care of it before that.

It must be the service line running to your house from the main line? Otherwise, most utility companies will take down a tree by the wire. I worked for a utility company and we jumped at any chance to take down a tree by a line. Well, I really wasn't enthusiastic about it, but they always wanted us to do it.

Here are the two poplars near the neighbors house. I already dropped 4 other ones on the property line(can see some of the stumps still) but decided not to risk it with these two. The one closest is to the house is the only one that concerns me, the other one would be an easy drop. In reality they both probably are buy not worth the risk for me when I can afford to have it done safely. One is 16"@BH and the other is 20"@BH. The one near the power line is an ash that is a little more than 20"@BH, I don't have pics of that one right now.

No it's the main line, I think with as bad as things are in this state financially and with all the dead ash tree's we have they can only do so much. Only reason I'm taking it down is 133 bucks for one tree is a lot cheaper than the inconvenience it would cause me if it fell on the line!

Your right 400.00 is much cheeper than what could happen. I could set here and tell you its easy peasy but I would also have rigging in the tree to make sure I get the perfect drop. Good rope a lone is couple hundos!

It was only 250 for those two and another 150 for the ash that's going to require climbing. Trust me I do think they look easy peasy but after reading and seeing some unexpected things happen to people I'd rather not risk the neighbors house for a few bucks.

The folks who work for our utility company will not usually cut a deal. Guess it's a matter of liability. Private contractors are usually happy to deliver mulch or deliver wood cut to length. Saves them a trip.

Wish you where closer, but doesnt sound like he is knocking you over the head on price either.

rdust, that is extremely reasonable for cutting those trees and I think you took the right path.

As for the power company cutting trees, that used to be the case but no longer. I had a tree that was dead and rotting on the bottom. You could plainly see it would take down the line that runs to our house. Three times I tried to get the power company to take it down and three times I failed. Two of those times was when the crew was here doing some maintenance clearing too! Trouble was, it was 3 feet from the right-a-way. No matter that it would take down the line; they would not worry about that until it came down. Great thinking on their part....

A good size poplar fell in my yard and could have hit one of 4 houses including mine but it missed back in the December storm. This tree was about 65 feet tall and at the base raises three feet off the ground.I got an estimate of $2300.00 from a tree service to cut up and take the tree away.I just wanted the estimate for my insurance.Anyway there is no way I'd pay that money. The tree is down how much would they have wanted if the tree was still standing.I must of looked like a fool to this guy. However I'll keep the insurance money and cut up the tree myself it'll burn hot and fast.So your price is a steal, cheers.

You got paid $2300 to cut up popular? In your yard? And you got the fun of cutting it up?
, How much good CSD wood can you get for $2300. Then sell/give the popular. LOL Good deal.

I gotta talk to my insurance guy. I know I got a tree I can knock down somewhere.

Good for you.
I like these kind of stories. Happy ending ones. :)

A "Risk-Reward" thing.
I agree if any thing would have gone wrong, tree guys are insured to cover it. Glad it went well.

Good "risk assessment".
Well spent money.
Potential problem trees are now in the history books. Never to be a problem.

Here in Illinois, we have a main overhead line (really big voltage) that runs through one of our properties.
For years, the crews came in every 2-3 years and pruned.
Last year the area supervisor offered me a deal to cut down several of the trees they had been pruning.
The deal wasn't great, but since the utility has been talking about cutting them, just because they can (within x distance of their easement) we decided to let them remove several trees.
They paid $125.00 per tree, and left the firewood.

My insurance company would only give me $1000.00 to have it cut and hauled.I'm glad to have that though.I'll cut it up in the spring when the snow pulls back.

I'd love to have someone give me a grand to cut firewood!!! :)
