Just curious here...I just got a "new" stove delivered and the date of manf. on the paperwork indicates Oct 20, 2008. Is this common practice in this industry?
2 1/4 years old still considered new?

So how old was your stove when you bought it new?

Our Fireview was less than 24 hours old when bought it. We even got to pick out the stone parts and met the man who built it.

I bought a new (never fired) Kent Tile Fire recently. It was made in July 86, so it's 24.5 years new. Do I win????

WOW! Thats NOS (new old stock). Common with other stuff, never heard before of it with stoves.

Mine had 2008 manufacture date and I bought it in 2009.

About 30 years old.
About 20 years old.
About 6 years old.

But none were new, though. So, I guess I don't qualify.

My brother just bought a VC Vigilant 1978 Never been fired. Only paid 700 for it. Have an appraisal done by VC by original owners done last month. Bought it new to put in cabin, next week it burnt down. The old man has been putting polish on it every year hoping one of his kids wanted it. Now they are moving out of state and just needed to sell it.

Never been fired?!?!?! Inherited mine in 2005, difference is it was used to heat from 1978 until then. I think it is just about broken in now.

Bought mine in Sept '10 and it was built in March of '10.

Thanks...I should be clearer...I'm referring to purchasing new from a dealer.
2 1/4 years old seems like they are trying to dump old stock on me.

We have various Wood and Gas Vermont Castings stoves that are still brand new in the crate from the early-mid 90's.

...but do you sell them as a "brand new" current model if someone came in today? Or do you explain it's age so the customer is aware and reduce the price accordingly?

Shelburne. Bought in 8/10. New, but not really. Was a floor model with several small fires. Manufactured 7/06. Dealer said they would honor a 5 year warranty from date of purchase.

Jotul F600. Bought 2/11. Manufactured in 09.

Of course we explain it to the customer. Heck, we've been selling brand new enameled radiances for around grand.

With that said, we typically purchase about 40-50 Regency/Hampton stoves in the spring each year and sometimes we have some left over into the following season. In this case I usually don't make mention of it as long as the model is up to date. Not that we're trying to hide anything.... I don't see what difference it makes.

Did you know that the F600 was 2 years old when purchasing? Price adjusted for age?

My Hearthstone insert was manufactured about one year before i bought it new from a local dealer. I thought that was a bit odd....

Yes, yes, and yes. Never would be able, or would agree, to pay what new stove would cost for either. Basically got both for combined price of what new F600 would cost. But, many, many hours of searching craigslist and ebay were required along with some haggling.

11 months old: built Jan 08, purchased Dec 08. Still had that new stove smell ;-)

I don't think it matters as long as the model is still the same with nothing changed. If warranty is starting from the purchase date everything is good to go in my mind.

PFFT! It's not like a car or day old bread. Get over it.

Mine was installed by the previous owner, but looking at the paperwork and the label on the stove, it appears it was installed a year after it was built. There aren't usually very drastic changes in a stove model from year to year, so I don't think it matters much. I can't think of a single thing that would go wrong with a stove sitting in a warehouse. Other than being sad and lonely.

Agreed, not a big deal unless there was a major design change between the manufacturing and sale dates.
