Texas- West of Houston
Sixteen degree lows for the next two nights followed by two more nights in very low 20s. High in low 30s. Wind gust hit 29 knots today and sustained all day long of 16-20. Four nights of very hard freeze with daytime highs too low to allow much thawing is rare in this part of Texas (about an hour west of Houston.) Might even have a little snow on Friday.

I was running low on this year's wood so scrounged up some dead and down back in my woods yesterday - when it was 75 degrees. Real ugly stuff but it will burn. I think I have enough to get me through this cold snap. I've had five or six rounds of eight inch diameter hickory that were bucked about three years ago that have been laughing at my 8lb maul and my Fiskars SS for the past several months. Both tools just bounce right off of them and don't hardly make a dent.
I tried to noodle them with a freshly sharpened MS390 (muffler Mod- 16 incher) yesterday and it just threw off sawdust as fine as baby powder. Might as well have been trying to chain saw a cinder block.

I finally took took my sledge and two metal wedges and was eventually able to split them. They all tested at 24% to 26% MC. But you know what? I'm going to put two splits on top of the fire at bed time for my overnight burn and I'll bet they'll do just fine by the time they work their way down to the bottom of the stack. I'll bet they'll keep me from having to get up in the middle of the night to feed the stove, too. You might not be able to do that in your fancy-schmancy CAT stove but my VC Vigilant will handle it. Lord forgive me, though. I might have to clean the glass afterwards.!

Be safe and stay warm, my Friends.

Ken near Bellville, Texas. Halfway between Cat Spring and Raccoon Bend.

I am not feeling dog! lol That is really cold for Texas Get Your Blaze On..............

Kenster, I up In Longview, 4:30 now and 21 deg wind layed some still kinda cold, I will have to go out and put a heater on my water supply pump. We been burning some oak -hickory little pine that's been down 2 yrs. at home we only have metal fireplace that take 30 in. logs, not very efficient but it works. maybe get down to 13 tonight it was 17 when I left for work this morning. see ya later

My brother in law is outside of Dallas. They are freezing their @#$@s off. They have rolling blackout to contend with the excessive electic heater usage.

Our first rolling blackout hit at 0800 this morning. Another at 1145. Lasted 20-30 minutes. It was 16 degrees out side and really windy but we woke up to 72 degrees inside with our woodstove showing almost 400 degrees after an all night burn. I've kept it at around 400 all day just throwing a split or two in every once in a while. I'll pack it again tonight getting ready for 16 again.

I dont think they know how to build houses in texas for the cold, guy I work with in Sweetwater has frozen pipes and another one's dad in Dumas had frozen pipes and a screwed up furnace and the house is less than a year old.

You''re too right about the pipes. Our house is built with all pipes beneath the house. not a single one in the attic. We have a well so everything stays underground. Never has frozen.

Low of 7 here today with high of 16. Windchill has been negative. Staying toasty feeding the Buck insert @ the farm with post oak & Blakjack oak - love the stuff- had to deliver about 1/6 cord to neighbors down the way to make it through the cold snap. Overnight low to dip to - 2; looks like we will consume more wood this week than rest of season thus far. Rolling blackouts are a disappointment for tv, not heat for us. Been Wii Mario around here for the wife & 8 year old boy for two solid days pretty much. Stay warm and safe. Btw- those deliveries were on a Polaris Ranger. Now that was cold for Texas!

Yeah been talking to family in Wichita Falls and Bowie. They be hating life right now. Looking at lows of nine tonight. Earlier it was forecast to be two. With the winds there the wind chill will be well below zero for them.

And here I am overheating the house with the night load since our temps aren't dropping as fast as forecast so it is still 34 here.

And here we are in the rocky mountain region, where the tuesday was -4 for a high, -20 for A low. Went to fill and turn on the boiler, taco pump leaking. Two stoves goin' full blast and the house struggled to stay at 65. Guess I better fix the circ pump just in case. I can imagine that 5 degrees in texas would cause lotsa problems with water. 20 in southern arizona caused havok all the time!

10* degrees this morning with -11* windchill! Yikes!
