Just do not have time to scrounge. Too many other things going on.

For Winter of 2011-12, I plan to buy 5 cords of cut/split seasoned wood this Spring. Think I will be looking at around $230 per cord delivered.

For Winter of 2012-13, I am thinking about buying green log length wood this Spring/Summer. Once dropped in the backyard, I would cut, rent a splitter and split myself. There is a source nearby that will deliver what is reportedly a 5 cord load for $500. Is this a reasonable price or should I keep looking?

Depends what it is. Hopefully not Aspen/Poplar. Around here Birch is $80/cord and Ash is $100, 12 cord minimum order.

100/ cord for logs is pretty much what we get around here. That is what my friend pays, he goes through about 15-20 truck loads / year. He sells firewood for a living. He sells a cord for $225.00. The wood comes in, the wood goes out.

Let's see a pic of that truck & trailer!!!!

I think that is a fair price, but ask what you are getting for species. Also, you should discuss diameter of logs with the supplier. I'd be wanting logs between 12" and 24" diameter. Some suppliers might work with you on this. Cheers!

The only thing i have an issue with is the renting a splitter. Investing in a splitter makes dealing with wood a dream. There is no trying to align the stars in your life to get the wood split - just an hour or two here or there.

As always, it depends upon what type of wood it is. When they say hardwood, I would throw out caution. If they specify what hardwood it is, then the decision becomes much easier. Like LLigetfa said, you'd hope it was not all popple! Yes, that is a hardwood but there is a world of difference between oak and popple. Or ash and cottonwood. Or birch and willow, etc.

Paper birch & willow starts getting close at least around here. How you doing there Dennis? Randy

WE're holding in there Randy. Pain seems to get a bit less every day for the most part. Wish I could get outside more as then I would walk more. I did go down the driveway a short distance yesterday afternoon and then a short ride on the atv. It's just nice getting outside again.

Hey, You'll be sittin on that milk crate again in no time Dennis, Randy

And I'm looking forward to that too Randy. I'm betting by April I can get out there to do some splitting. Not a lot to split this year though as I've only cut about 3 cord. It still will be nice working with the wood again. Not sure how the bending will go though so the stacking might pose a problem as will sitting low on that crate. Time will tell.
