Feeling the Heat

Ok..I've been burning Barefoot pellets for most of the season and I have been noticing in the burn pot a funky color when burning these pellets in the base of the flame. Typical burn you would get a blue with a reddish going to orange Right? As I sat in front of the roaring pellet stove I happen to notice a greenish color at the base of the flame. I say to my self that's weird...I didn't have to much to drink that night.. but that doesn't look right. So I inspected a few bags of Barefoot pellets in my stash and sure enough the pictures tell the story. This year the Barefoots are subpar. Lots of ash and heat is good but not great. I hope they get there act together for next season and get some good product to there customers. Pics coming....Having problems attaching..

you are not alone----have been happy with barefoots until this season. I also had that date stamp.

That's the grading stamp off the end of the log or lumber that was ground up.

Or they were going to make your batch into D-CON and lost interest.

Grading stamp? It's been consistant in every bag so far. I am no expert but it just doesn't add up. If I saw it in other manufacturer pellets I guess it would be more realistic. Any other suggestions out there?

Could be a binder or die lube? But one way to find out is go straight to the source. Send an email to them with pictures asking nicely WTF?

I have burned BF's on and off for the last few years when I could score them reasonably. I have never seen them stained with green spots. Or have I seen a green flame. This season I bought Hamers and Cubex. Which have also had there share of complaints in the forums. The thing that gets me is people paid more for these brands expecting better performance from them. If it we me and I got stuck with a sub par batch. I would be looking for answers and explanation's!

I am using AWFs and have noticed a green tint at the very bottom of the flame. In cleaning the hard deposits out of the burn pot I have noticed a green coloring in the deposits. Could this be some sort of minerals? I have not noticed any coloring in the actual pellets. :)

Now I've heard everything. They are grade stamping pellets! It's about time. HaHa

Put a few of the pellets in a glass of water and let them dissolve. Then you may be able to isolate the blue particle and see what it is. Any oily sheen or film on water surface is probably die lube BTW is the bag stamped with a BTU/LB value. DJ

Are your AWF's LONG... I have some that are almost as long as my index finger. Average length of 1 3/4" to 2". Sent them an e-mail last week. They were very kind and gave me a $50 check/gift card. Should be here this week.. Wasn't expecting anything, just wanted to let them know.
To the OP. Like J-takeman said, send them an email and see what they do for you. A Good Company should stand behind there product. Without us telling them what's wrong, they can't make it better.

Dexter:
I like those nice - long - pellets you've shown.

I have an issue with short pellets as they dance and jump out of my burn box and land in the ash tray unburned! So I don't see 'long' as a problem unless they start to clog the auger ...

I've used 'Stove Chow' from Home Depot - but found those to be very (too) short ...

I was hoping any other members burning Barefoot noticed the same thing in there bags? I am going to write to the company next week and hope to see a response and I'll provide feedback on the forum.

Reduce your damper setting and the pop corning should stop.

I'm more inclined to select the second possibility or in the alternative someone was playing with various machine fluids, as in not noticing what was leaking where and continuing to fill up the "tank".

I have used AWFs for two seasons and have never seen any pellets that long...amazing.

I'm burning Barefoots but my date code thing says 6 / 10..... I have no green stuff like you have...... Also burning Hamers and Dry Creek.... All 3 brands have been pretty good so far.....

The 2 tons I got early last spring had a date code of 08/09....never saw any green stuff on the pellets like that. My guess is die lube.

Funny things happen when seals fail and lubricant is present.

What wouldn't normally get on or into things can.

Hmmm...A lot of our product comes in on pallets which are painted red and green. Wonder if they're grinding up pallets?

Chan

its certainly not a binder, chemical additive type binders are not generaly used with wood pellets. wod contains the binder in its natural state , the substance "lignen" a water soluable natural adhesive is present in wood. was used for years (probably still is) as a bookbinder

im with imac, i suspect its somthing used to support the machine that got away from the manufacturer

Have seen colors similar on OSB materials.

Wonder if they are grinding scrap OSB boards?

YOU found it. It is the Mind Controlling chemical agent. Step away from the bag and do nothing, just watch tv and pretend you saw nothing.

Not even a possibility.....if scrap lumber that had colors on the outside of the wood was then ground up, hammermilled to dust, and then run through a hot pellet die, you would never see anything like those in the pic.
