Has anyone ever had an issue where ice falls and hits their exhaust pipe? Two sizeable pieces have come off the roof this year to hit the pipe and scare me to death. I was considering looking at the specs of how much room the exhaust needs, and then building a structure to stop ice from hitting the pipe. Has anyone ever done this or faced a similar problem? I will have to upload pictures of this later today when the sun is up and I can get out there to do so.

I will assume that you have a direct vent out the wall ????

If it were me, I would bolt together some 4x4's and make a little "temporary" structure that has a sloped "roof" on it that you can sit alongside the house during the Icey times.

Make this device so that it doe not hinder the airflow in any way and will shelter the exhaust pipe.

(4) 4x4 posts (pressure treated)
(2) 2x4's for each side as "X braces"

Cut the two outer 4x4's a foot shorter to provide a good slope
Add a 2x4 on each side to form the "Roof Joist"
Add some 2x4 between to support either roof metal or plywood and cover with 3 tab.

Build this unit so that it is a foot or two above the exhaust outlet and does not interfere with air flow.

Using pressure treated 4x4, the unit can sit on the ground without rotting.

If you want you could lay some conctrete flat pads down into the dirt and level them up, then you will have a nice place to sit the "SHIELD"

You could build a deflector onto the house, but this would take more work.

The portable can be stored off location during all other times of the year that you dont have snow and ice.

It will not take much to deflect those ice falls.

Post a piccy of the pipe exit so we can see the situation.

Just an idea

Hello

You could put either heat cable or a water diverter on the roof above the flue so there are no icecles forming above it.

Snow rake the roof, ice won't form.

I like the idea you have snowy. If we didn't have a whiteout today, I would have gotten out to take some pics. I think the weather is going to keep me from putting up heat tape this year. Thanks for the input everyone.

Good luck with the situation.
