Low of 34 last night. Had a great fire. I only burn if the overnight low is 40 or lower. Forecast for next two weeks calls for lows in the mid 40s to low 50s. There's always a chance of a late winter, early Spring cold snap but nothing in the cards for now so I may have burned my last split for this season. Kinda sad in some ways but at least I can stop scrambling for enough dry wood to get me through "just a couple more nights."
Actually, I have enough for three or four more nights as long as I don't need to burn during the day also. Got about two cords of Water oak and pin oak split and stacked and hope to get at least one, maybe two more cords in before I go back to work mid-March. After that I will be on the road nearly constantly until mid October, plus it will be too hot to cutting and splitting wood.
Some of my future use stash is going to need two years but maybe half of it is from tree tops or from standing dead that had a head start in drying and is already down to mid 20s on the meter. And, I have recently spotted three nice size downed trees back in the woods that must have been dead for some time but are still pretty solid. If I get them cut and split soon they'll probably be good to go next winter.

I've got access to non burning friends' property that have enough recently downed oak to last me several lifetimes. Every pickup load I split and stack from there brings me about a third of a cord. I should be able to get a couple of cords of that put away in the next month.

To the rest of you, enjoy the remainder of your burning season.

Ken

Have a good spring and summer Ken. We will be thinking about you when we get a late Feb. or early March snow.

Thanks, Bart. I'll still be around. A big part of the enjoyment I get from this 'hobby' is reading this board- and learning from it.

Send some of that warm stuff up here would ya please?

Yup. My family was saying how it's supposed to "warm up" this week but no one invested much thought into it staying that way. No matter. The colder it gets the more my wood stove shines!! :)

Nice warm spell here past few days - 40-45 Fri & Sat,51 right now :bug: ,38-42 through middle of week.61 expected on Thursday but I'll believe that when it gets here lol.I know we'll pay for it in a couple weeks, most years when Boys & Girls State HS Basketball Tournament goes on,then Wrestling afterwards you can count on a major storm at least one of those 3 weeks.

I don't think we are very far behind you, in terms of Spring temps. I have to admit that I'm getting tired of "Winter" and am looking forward to it's departure. We could STILL have a nasty "March" though.........

Kenster Im up here in Longview, it 74 now supposed to be mid 70 all week, We had probbaly last fire last week in the SNOWSTORM we got,
I have enough wood for maybe 3 more but temps will have to be in 40 or lower before zi start another. Now We go up to our lake house and if it gets 50 my wife wants a fire we prollay go this wweekend and if a fire makes her happy then maybe I be happy.

You know what the grounhog said. But, I'll believe it when I see it. We will certainly be burning until April or May. But today, we only used a few small splits so far, it got to 48 this afternoon. Tonights low will be low 20's. Good luck with getting your wood supply ready. I can't wait until all the snow melts around here, so I can get next years wood out of the snow. Then I really need to get serious about getting ahead with the wood supply. I failed miserably last year.

nice story ken, for me the sadest day of the year is when the last snow on the ski hills has melted away and i have to go indoors to ice skate. its a vicious cycle that keeps us all alive. god bless texas. pete

We are seeing our wood consumption slow right now but not stop.

One of the most interesting/frustrating things happening right now is that we have recently brought a treadmill into our home. The only place for it is the room with the stove.

Makes for some fun conversations with my wife as to timing of stove loads so she is not cooked right off the treadmill.

We still have lots of heating season left and even a few weeks of outdoor skating left.

Pete, I last skied about eight years ago. I made a contract with my knees that day. I promised them that if they held out long enough to get me down off the mountain that I would never test them again. I kept my promise.

Well even a cool night at the lake just cries out for a nice fire, doesn't it. Yep, we have to keep our brides happy.
I proposed to mine 37 years ago tonight.

Today the stove went cold for the first time in a very long time. A cold front is blowing in with a vengeance but I just turned the thermostats on the radiator space heaters on. Time for a break. I can live through a couple of day's electric bill like my neighbors have every day of winter. Gonna be cold tomorrow but headed to the high sixties for a few days after that and I need a break before whatever happens next, happens.

This time last year we were trying to recover from Snowmageddon.

Looks like your expecting the same weather we are. Even better, your well aware of when the wrestling season ends. Its probably a law in "Gable" country though.

kenster- it'll be quite awhile before anyone around this neck of the woods talks about their last burn of the season! at least 2 more months and maybe into may, who knows for sure beside zap and backwoods???
congrats on your successful proposal 37 years ago....i wonder how many started out on valentines day???

Thanks, Dave. I make it through the UP at least once a year, often twice. I'm a tour director and sometimes lead a tour "Around Lake Michigan." Start in Milwaukee and work our way around the lake counter-clockwise coming out of Mac Island, hugging the coast. Escanaba, etc and end up in Green Bay that night. Eventually back to Milwaukee.

Low of 34 here, last night, too, by coincidence. Whoops! Sorry, that was 34 below. Had a nice fire going here, too.

Have a terrific summer!

Congrats Ken for the happy 37 years and may you share 37 more!

So much for the warm up we had yesterday, today's high is 19 low 11, 18 right now and climbing one more degree! Stove is full and burning for the entire day.

I think I might be done soon as well. We are part time (weekend) burners, and even though our house is not well insulated we have a very good southern exposure and get a LOT of solar gain. I have found that if the daytime high is much over 40F on a sunny day or 45F for a cloudy day its not worth lighting the stove - too easy to overheat the house.

In the past the last burn day seems to come suddenly... a cold snap will end and then it just goes into the 50s and stays there. We will see if we have the same this year, its predicted to be in the 50s the next 3 days....

Still lighting up a morning fire, but I shaved off the beard. C'mon Spring!

How could you not burn tonight? Lows in the single digits near zero for us in Cerntral Mass. A loaded fire box for the overnight fire could save you the hassle of having the furnace pump all night. I can't wait for the warm up this Wednesday-Friday.

How?

2 reasons....

#1 - Natural Gas at 80 cents/therm means I am not saving that much $ burning wood.

#2 - Twin infants in the house means I don't have time to fuss with the stove except for the weekends when my wife and I have extra help in the house (grandparents).

So I don't mind letting the boiler do its thing......

:)
