Feeling the Heat

I have been looking the past several months for a large stove to repace an old insert, which is vented directly into the chimney. I have been checking craigslist within 8 hours of my house as well as Ebay. I finally found a new, Jotul f600 with brown enamel. The stove has several small knicks on the enamel, but all very small. I saw all of the pics and spoke with the person. I have a return option if I am not satified. I have never bought on ebay so I was a little weary, but I ran it by several ebay regulars I know and they said I was ok with the person.

The other problem was getting the wife to agree. We just installed (in November) a Shelburne in an addition room without heat...best move we ever made.

My rationale for getting the stove....
1. We are an all electric house and rates are only going up. Also, effective 2012, we lose out on a substantial discount through PECO.
2. The insert we have is old, unsafe, and very inefficient.
3. We lost electric for 18 hours the other day and the insert didn't cut it, especially without blowers. With an infant, and God willing more someday, I don't want to worry..
4. Couldn't beat the price, even with shipping. Half of quotes from shops.
5. This stove is awesome!

Was I crazy for purchasing this stove?

Sounds like a no brainer. Enjoy the heat!

Rather, I think you'd be crazy NOT to be doing this.

Start accumulating your wood supply for next winter ASAP. At this point, you're already a bit late with wood for next year if you're starting out with fresh cut wood.

Just an fyi on the brown touch up paint. Its a near match almost perfect..... the down side to it though is it will slightly discolor if its in a high heat area of the stove. To my knowledge most enamel touch up paint will do the same. So I would be curious to where the touch up was needed.

I would rather be warm than look at a stove w/ a mint condition paint job.

Do be aware that there was a catalytic version of the F600 produced for a short time. It was not considered one of Jotul's most successful efforts.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Most of the areas needing touch up are on the back. One on the lower front, which is tough to even notice. No areas on top of stove.

It was listed as non catalytic.

Yes, I need to start on the wood asap! I have about 2 cords split since November. I have about 1 more in rounds. There are also several standing dead in woods I need to get to. And, craigslist scrounging...

The Shelburne I have had 2 minor spots needing touch up when bought. The dealer gave some touch up paint, and unless you are looking from 6 inches away, you barely notice.

I have never be so excited for a Monday to arrive!

You say your current stove is vented directly into chimney but do not give any dimensions for chimney. You might want to consider a stainless liner. The stove will draw better and you will have less creosote. Also cleaning the chimney will be easy. If you decide to install a liner be sure to clean chimney before installation.

I agree with most of the folks on here, Jotul is a great stove ( I am partial) and your reasons that you listed are all great ones, especially the cost of electricity and the electricity going out for periods of time. Believe me your wife will fall in love with the stove when the power goes out again and you are warm enough and able to cook if need be. Enjoy...

It got here on Tuesday. I took some pics of the stove. The guy wasn't kidding when he said the nicks were small. I really had to look close to find some. I can't wait to get her installed. My son was just as excited as me. Also it was good to hear the wife said she loved it and it was so much better looking in person than the pics online. Some deals are as good as they sound.

Looks great. That was a great move. That is one cute kiddo.

That's terrible, send it back! I will handle the claim. PM me for my address. :cheese:

Really nice looking stove!!!! I think you got a real deal!! It's AWESOME that you are responsible to concerned about your family--keeping them toasty in a power outage. And keeping the bills paid. Nothing like wood heat! Your son sure is a cutie!! Great family memories!

If you have to reline your chimney, my boys and I did it ourselves. We didn't insulate it, but we did use the stainless chimney flex liner from magna flex. it worked out really well for us. worked out for our budget too! stove works good

Is the back of the stove cast as well or plate steel? I'm curious about the baffle and wondering how far it extends off the back of the stove. Great purchase btw. I've beeing eyeing the F600 for awhile now and your pictures are quite a bit different than those on the Joutl site. Let us know how she's doing once you get her installed.

OP,

What's with the Shelburne? You said the insert wasn't working for you, but didn't mention the Shelburne. Is it a problem, located in another property, in the basement...?

Just think, in five years you will have someone to stack all that wood that you will be cutting... no chain saw tho , my old man made me wait till i was 17 before i was allowed to use the saw. i think mostly cause that meant i had to do all the stacking, and splitting.

Here are some pics of the back. It appears to be cast and not steel.

Dan,
The Shelburne has been great. Nothing wrong with it at all. It is in an addition room off the back of the house. Stove is a little larger than probably needed for the room but I preferred a slightly larger stove than needed to get longer burn times and maintain the heat in the room overnight. The heat from that room doesn't circulate to other parts of the house...only one doorway for it to get through. I try moving it, especially to our bedroom, but there are several areas it gets trapped.

BC,

Is that baffle cast iron or vermiculite? Reason I ask is I've heard the small F500 (Oslo) used to have a cast baffle and now they use vermiculite. I guess the reason they changed out the Oslo was due to warpage. Apparently the older Oslo had a two piece baffle. Now the Oslo vermiculite baffle is one piece.

PS Really NICE looking stove you got there! :)

From the pics it appears as though the stove has been taking care of . . . and since it was shipped to you one could say you already have some ready-to-go stove fuel once you bust up a few of those pallets.

looks like you got a great deal. When something is scratched that little I would just leave it. Kind of makes me feel better when I drag a log on it or do something to scratch it myself. but I have never had a car paint job touched up either. Cute kid you got there. My kids lay on the hearth and watch cartoons. They're even a little sad when they have to get out of the tub and get dressed without a fire going in the fireplace. I've always had great memories of growing up with a wood fireplace and am glad i can do the same for my kids. There's no shortage of free wood and stacking with my 5 yearold is really entertaining !

nice score,if you dont point out the imperfections i would guess no one would notice them, besides its now cosmeticaly broken in. best of luck with the install and may you have many, many years of power free heat. pete
