Just wondered if anyone had some thoughts on storing pellets over the summer... Do the pellets take on any moisture?? Could I go buy me my next yrs. supply and store them outside in the shed, or would I then have trouble with them next yr?? Here in central KS it gets quite hot and humid in the middle of July and August. Would that hurt the pellets or no? Has someone tried it? Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Well I've kept pellets over the summer the last two years and no problems. You have to keep them from getting exposed to liquid water, if there is free flowing air and no way for the rain to get to them the natural binder does a very good job of protecting them. So keep them inside a building if possible.

Note, I'm not in KS. But we get fog, drizzle, and plenty of downpours, so the humidity tends to run up there in the summer. Hot is always iffy here, but we had plenty of both last summer.

ive actually had some in garage storage for the better part of 2 whole years and they seem to work ok, although I do think they took on some moisture from condensation over the course of two years, plus however long they sat in storage at the mill. I don't know how long a bag/ton of pellets will last if kept out of the elements. I'd think they would start to break down after a while.

I've stored bags for over 3 years with no problems due to condensation. We actually got flooded last spring, the only pellets damaged were those that went under. I've never exposed them to direct sunlight, but I don't see heat alone causing any issues. I'd be more concerned with rodents.

Burning the bottom of the pile this year after rotating stock, had about 85 bags, some 4-5 years old, no problems whatsoever, just keep the rain off them..

really? thats interesting. Makes me want to make more room in my garage and buy 10 ton. I think were in for a bad spell as far as soaring energy prices

If I had the room at 187.00/ton I'd have no problem buying 4-5 years worth
