So, it's funny what you take for granted as being normal. Luckily talking to others, and posting here, really help clarify things for those of us with little first hand experience.

Last season I burned newp, but just over half a ton. Then started this season with the stove getting the auger and ignitor replaced.

Burned the remaining 20 bags this fall. Since then I have burned another full ton (in the new bags with a window), and recently switched to Okanagans. The okies clearly make my stove happier and 'feel' warmer. I've been using up some of my remaining newp bags that I have on the porch, before going back to remaining okies in the barn...

After swapping brands it is clear the newp are causing my stove to occasionally groan/whine. The auger seems to have issues with some of their larger pellets it seems (guessing). Perhaps it is the thickness of their outer skin(?). They also are producing much more ash, which given the design of the enviro empress means more downtime for cleaning, as the burn pot clogs within 2-3 bags.

I did a swap with my father, 2 bags of newp for a bag of green team and a bag of potomac that he got cheap from lowes a while back. So I am going to give those a try, and burn the rest of the okies.... but my main issue is that I still have an un-opened ton of newp in the barn...

I've got their customer rep's number/name, but honestly, is anyone else here burning newp without an issue? Perhaps it's the combination with my stove? Is there anyone with an enviro that is burning more that a handfull of bags before having to clean the burn pot?

I used the NEWP a couple of years ago and was not impressed. I didn't have any moans or groans from the auger but the low heat output, ash and clinker build up was pretty bad compared to the other pellets I was using at that time, Pure Fire, Juniata and Wood Pellet Co. I used the NEWP in the winter of 2006 and 2007 and they were a great pellet back then. Something happen after that and it will be a while before I go and try them again. These were the Jaffery, HN. plant pellets, never tried the Schuyler, NY ones.

I bought them because NEWP was made by a local company and my local hardware store carried them with decent delivery price (I have no truck). This year I got my okies from there also, so it looks like I'll be avoiding newps from now on. It really is a pity, as I am a Free Stater (albeit a less active one), so I am all about supporting the state you live in for the good of the people in that state. In Sandown NH, so I figured it was a good option... a pity it isn't working out.

Are there any other NH pellet producers?

You will like the greene teams. If you find a pellet that your stove likes you can mix the NEWPS in with them until you use them up.

I have not tried the newp's , but I do have an enviromaxx.
Would opening the air damper help with the burn pot clogs ?
I had similar issue with the MWP (athens) ( NEVER AGAIN ) and I opened the damper , that helped alot.
Had to increase air flow quite a bit to burn those gosh awful pellets (1st season).
If you can , maybe sell them or swap with other pellets. My enviro is finicky with long pellets also.
You will like the greene team alot !
Stay warm !

Would it be possible to return these pellets for a refund ? IMO, these pellets are not right and seller should take them back or exchange them!

I'll take them off your hands, if you want to get rid of them.
I live in Weare, NH and can come down with the trailer
This weekend. Money is tight, and I have a baby coming this month.
Just trying to keep my house warm, because oil is so expensive.
My email is: [email protected]
Please contact me if you decide to get rid of them.
They would be very much appreciated.
Thank You

I had really good luck with this years batch of NEWP. My stove liked them. I am having more problems with the okies. Newp had almost no fines in the bags, the okies are loaded. Goes to show you about different batches. The NEWP's I burnt were in the clear bag from the NY plant. I read the bad reviews about them but I had good luck burning them.

Hearing stuff like this might just get me to try a few of the newer bags to see if they are like they use to be but I really don't need any more pellets any time soon.

I finally burned my last bag of NEWPs from the NY plant this week. Massive ash and low heat. Trying a few bags of Stove Chow before I plunk down $187 for a ton at HD. So far they are burning hot and clean.

I have no issues with burning NEWP in my Enviro Mini with the new Mini-A control board and new pot and pot liner. I do have the air open a Little more so I don't have to scrape and Vac the pot every day. My auger has no complaints pushing the longer pellets through as well.

Every stove like pellets differently for the most part, specially with the lower tier stoves. That aside, when a customer calls and says their stove is crapping out and I ask what they are burning...

I am burning them this year with no issues, however my OPB is a multi-fuel burner and isn't that picky, depending on where you are I would buy them off you for the $189/ton HD is selling their pellets for right now.

I can imagine that if you bring the remaining bags back to the dealer, they would exchange or refund......why not?

I've burn NEWP all this season so far they burned great, except the last batch of 20 bags I got are burning crappy for some reason, I cleaned my stove from top to bottom even the vent pipe and still they burn crappy!! I know its not the stove because I burned some Northerns I have and they burned great. Wonder whats going on?

I burned 4 ton last year and they were longer than I would like ,but the heat was O.K. I bought 3 ton this year and they seem to be smaller in size, and hotter. So maybe you got a batch from early 09,when they had some issues.

The NEWP I'm burning are from the Jaffrey plant with all bags dated Oct 19, 2009. At best they should be considered "shoulder" pellets, and only if you don't mind the excessive ash and clinkers they're producing. I've burned NEWP before and never had this much trouble with them. As many people are seeing, different years and different batches of raw material really has an effect on the heat output and cleanliness of pellets. I purchased my current supply last summer at a "sale" price. Because my crystal ball was in the shop, I couldn't predict that pellet prices were going to drop the way they have. I've picked up a bunch of Stove Chow to try and if I like them, I'll be adding a few ton of them to the arsenal...

I have burned 8 tons of NEWP from Jaffery over the last 2 1/2 years. No problems in any of my stoves.

Burned NEWP last 2 winters with no issues. This year, lots of issues burning them in our Harman XXV. Have to shutdown & clean the stove every other day or it starts squealing. I called the dealer & they are having other clients getting a lot of carbon buildup with NEWPs this year & are calling NEWP. Now burning 5 bags of MaineChoice I got to try a few days ago. The MaineChoice seem to have less dust/fines & are very consistent in size. The NEWP sizes area all over the place - some 2" long or so!! More ash this year too! Not happy with NEWP this year at all. Waiting to find out from dealer what to do with the 2 tons we have left.

I've sent off an email to the newp guys, and we'll see where it goes from here. I appreciate all of the advice and suggestions, I'll repost if then up going for sale.

Glad to know that at least it isn't my stove, but more these pellets.

I have been burning "michigan wood fuel" pellets, with ok success.

They seem to vary by store and quantity.

Some bags im running the air more open as they clink up, then today have the air down nice and tight on low auger rate with great heat and almost no ash build up.

Have the stove dialed in on auger rate, heat setting four on thermostat set at 61 degrees in my shop. Pot is clean as a whistle and saving a lot of pellets.

The stove is an enviro mini, without the new board.

I thought I would bump this back up to the top and share some current info. I was surfing the woodpelletinfo.com site the other day and came across some info where NEWP was responding to some of the posts. I dropped an email to them and I received an immediate response from their Customer Service Rep. It turns out they did have some significant issues with QC and shipped out some bad product in 2009. The pellets I am using have 2009 dates on the bags so I am one of the victims. As my sig states I HAD been using nothing but NEWP for 14 years. This batch really soured me and the guys in my group who go in with us in a 50 ton buy every Spring. I have been able to use up almost all of my 2009 batch by mixing them with the Stove Chow I bought cheap this season. It's very hard to resist the $168/ton vs the $230 I paid for the NEWP last year.

Anyway, to get to the point, NEWP will stand by any of their product that is determined to be inferior and the Rep told me that they have swapped out the bad stuff for new with many customers. Having said that, only certain dates of product were determined to be a problem and that product would have come from the Schuyler plant prior to Nov 2009. They have taken it back and are either burning it or grinding it up and remanufacturing it. Just thought I would bring this up to date. Any product in the new clear bags shouldn't be considered a part of this problem.

As an FYI, they also told me and most of you know this, Warm Front is the same NEWP product rebagged and sold in areas where the regular NEWP brand is not. They also bag their product for woodpellets.com under the Cleanfire and Clearchoice label. Hope this helps.

So at least a year goes by and now they decide to swap out their problem pellets for new. How many customers would actually have pellets from 2009 still in storage ? If a company was really concerned about quality control, you'd think they'd burn a few bags from each batch to see what's happening and not wait for their customers to start blogging on the internet about the shoddy product. There are way too many choices in pellets these days to put up with substandard pellet suppliers. NEWP would be well advised to learn that lesson.

They didn't wait a year and if I implied that, I apologize. The blogging dates back to January of last year (2010) and they've been swapping the product out for a year. There are many of us who have more than a years supply in storage, I'm one of them. I was reaching out to those in this thread that had issues. It doesn't appear that you are one of them. Go throw your stones at someone else.
