When I first got the boiler, I wasn't so positive that I had the best settings, just from looking through the sight hole at the flame. I embedded a K couple in a 12" black pipe nipple with a cap on one end using that 2000 degree mortar (cartrige) that you can get at home depot. I ran the wire through the pipe and out the sight hole. I've made several of these since. They do not last too long, but it's interesting to see the temps. in the chamber. If I recall correctly the highest I've seen so far is 2200. Now I use a 6" nipple. It does not reach into the tube, but it lasts longer, and I can still judge when it's at top temp. (the temps. just register lower of course, more like 11- 1700)
 
It's pretty amazing how fast the flash ignition of the gas cools as it expands into the surrounding air.
