Hi, I just restored and installed a Vigilant 1C that was sitting in a dirt basemnt for 20 years. Last night I lit it for the first time. Upon reaching 450-500 degrees the stove exterior started to smoke and filled the house. The smoke was not a wood smell but more like a metal/hot burning smell. It seemed to be coming off at the rear around the baffles. Is this just the Williams polish or stove black burning off? Is this normal for the first burn after some 20 years of sitting? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Stoves will burn off the paint, when reaching high temps. Hard to believe a 20yo stove never reached 500 degrees, but I get its possible. Maybe they never had dry wood!

If you still see or smell something after 5 or 6 hours of burning hot, you may want to inspect it closer. Make sure the previous owners didnt put someone stupid on the stove.

Thanks for the responses.
I thought it was just the polish burning off and that's it. I will light it up when I am home on the weekend to be able to stay with it and observe(and to open the windows if it smokes again!).
It seemed to burn well and as it should (according to the manual) having a 6" flue. :wow:
