We replaced a Jotul Castine with a Hearthstone Heritage and used the same six inch flue double walled pipe. The length from stove to rain cap is 24 ft. We did not have a damper control with the Jotul and are wondering if installing one with the Heritage is a good thing to do. Stove temps are about 425 dampered down but the flue pipe seems to be much warmer [hotter] than with the Jotul. Input?...thak you.

How long have you had the Heritage? I'd play around with it for a month or so and learn the stove before deciding to installing a damper.

I feel that if you can keep your stove top temps under control simply using the primary air on your stove that the damper is not necessary.

I have one installed on my stove but have only used it 2 or 3 times in the past 2 years. It's mainly there for the "just in case" factor.

If you install one and use it without having an overly strong draft you will change the burn characteristics of the stove and risk increasing creosote accumulation in the chimney.

Actually this is only the second full day of use so I'm certain there is a learning period . My husbands comment ..it's a different breed than the cast iron. Its was my call on the Hearhtstone his choice would have been the Jotul Oslo for an upgrade so this is gonna be a process for me. He enjoys the "told you so" crap ..I hope this stove proves him wrong.

What are the temperatures you are seeing on the flue?

Get ready for an "I told you so", cuz the Heritage isn't really much of an upgrade over the Castine.

Yeah, both stoves list 55k BTU max output. The Heritage's firebox is ~ 30% larger (2.3 vs. 1.75 cu ft spec.), so there's an upgrade. Looks like that's going to translate into longer burn times rather than more heat, since the Heritage doesn't have a high cruising temp(likes it in the 400's, from what I've read.) Perhaps OP is wondering if a damper will help to get some more of that heat she detects in the flue into her house?

I wish it were that easy, but it won't on these modern stoves.
