I've been in houses where you could definitely tell they were burning wood. Almost always it was either an open fireplace or an older stove with very poor draft. When draft reverses in the cold flue and the chimney becomes an air intake, it leaves a really ugly smell in the house.

+1 . . . and coincidentally enough these are the homes I typically visit while dressed as a firefighter "costume."

Well I guess if the Govt. says it's good for me, I'll be a good little sheeple and follow along. Not.

I burn as clean as I can as the operator, and have 0 complaints from neighbors. Unless on start up or re-fill, they don't even see smoke.

And this my first year burning.

And don't forget to wear your bike helmet and elbow pads.

Just think how long we would live if we could eliminate ALL germs from our lives. LOL, not long I think.

If you are referring to EPA stoves being bad because the govt mandated them, you are poorly educated on the topic.

I AGREE that most things the gov't does are worthless.

However, all the gov't did here was tell the stove companies "clean it up" and when they did they also wound up making stoves that burned longer on the same amount of wood and you additionally get a cleaner and safer chimney.

Gov't didn't care how they cleaned it up, but it got the ball rolling for stove companies to get their R and D actually doing something.

The States should have the power to regulate, not the US Govt., per the Constitution.

I haven't read the studies that everyone else has. But like others, I have put more carbon emissions in the air by burning fire pits, other open fires and driving my truck in 51 years than my Vigilant will put out in it's entire life time of proper service. IMHO.

Now, let the US Govt. REALLY go after the real polluters in the world like giant factories. Instead of just feel good regulations that almost never get enforced in a serious manner.
