I cut a few smaller trees from a friend's (actually, one of my bosses) yard last fall. Also got ahold of a trunk that was almost 2' diameter. First I've cut in my 'adult' woodburning career. They're definitely not hard to find around here, I just don't have any in my woods. Anyway, I was screwing around outside today, and I grabbed a few uglies off the top of the stack. I guess I forgot how yummy it smells. I'm kinda excited for some nicer weather so I can smoke some pork, and the 'local' camping trips where I can take my own firewood.

This is our second year heating with wood and we burn over three cord of cherry per year heating the house with some sugar maple for the overnight burns.

Most of the wood we burn comes from downed trees and leaners, the cherry does smell good.

The big one was a bonus. I've got some farmer friends who are always up to something. When I get tired of cutting the dead ash in my woods, I stop in to see what's going on. Last time, they cleared a couple acres, to 'square off the field.' They had a pile of logs that they trimmed up for somebody who was supposed to come get the for his mill. 'Take them. Called him a month ago and they're still there. We're just gonna burn them in the spring.' Got over two cords of red and white oak, and that big cherry. I'd get more, but the snow drifts got me shut down.

I had some in and smelled it outside when taking the pup out does have a good funk to it almost like incense.

Ya the snow has kept me out of the woods since Feb. 5th, tomorrow I'll take the truck down and clear the entrance from the road out with the plow then try and take a run back in.

Rain coming in on Monday so it should get rid of the snow we received today. Spring is just around the corner.

I burn a bunch of cherry in my mix of hardwoods every year. Lately I have been in a pocket of it.

Cherry is the only wood I use for smoking kielbasa anymore.

Cherry leaves the meat with a nice red hue and a smokey flavor that is not overpower and doesn't seem to cause me indigestion.

Hickory is too strong for my taste.
Beech is OK but still makes the meat gray and seems a bit bitier than a rich smoke like cherry.
I'll cook steaks over apple but don't necessarily prefer it for smoking pork.

I actually like a little ash in the mix. Very mild, non-offensive flavor.

I just bought a cord of cherry today. There is a large lot that is being cleared by the road I drive into work each day and the guy has had a firewood for sale sign up for a month or so. Finally called him, asked what he had & how he sales it. He said nice clean cherry & sold it by the cord. Quoted $100 + $10 to deliver cut to 15" (my preference). That sounds too good to pass up so I said yes and we'll meet sometime tomorrow afternoon. He needed to split some more tomorrow am to top off the cord. I have a 2x4 rack on blocks set up to stack on that is 24' long and looking for 4' in height. I'm hoping I've found a wood guy to help supplement my scrounging.

Cherry is awesome to burn. I love it when I can find it. There are 4 - 5 8" plus dead and standing at the farm where the mares live.

They will be coming down & split shortly :)

A decent wood guy is an awesome find, especially when you can let it sit and season.

Even though those logs have been stacked for a while, don't count on them being dry! Oak can take a long, long time to dry out....after it is split and stacked.

In Germany they use beech for making smoked beers, but I usually use apple wood. I never thought to use cherry, but I have a bunch of branches and tops from 2 cords worth of cherry that I need to chip up, so perhaps I'll give it a try.

Darn cherry . . . it's one of the few woods that I can never resist stopping while splitting to hold up to my nose and take a deep whiff . . . which is usually about the time my wife looks outside to see me sniffing the firewood or a neighbor drives by and starts to wonder what exactly I am doing with the wood.

Well that didn't turn out so great ...surprise surprise
I finally got the call Sunday afternoon, he shows up right at dusk...DRUNK with a 1/2 ton PU load that is about 1/3 of a cord. I would have just told him to leave but the passenger he brought for unloading help was someone I knew so I worked out deal for what he had ($50). I explained what I was looking for in quantity and price and to call me later in the week if he wanted to sell on my terms. I'm not holding my breath while waiting on a response.
