Hi Everyone,

My mind is spinning. We moved into a house in the mountains, and need a wood stove. We saved up our money and have about $900.00 to spend on the stove. I found 2 stoves that I think would do the job, one is the Englander at Home Depot for $999.00 here is a link. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

And the other is a Century brand at Ace hardware for $800.00 and here is a link to that one. http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3706809

Lisa

Most all of the very low priced stoves are pretty decent these days....you don't get ALL the bells and whistles, but you get a solid product which will likely last you MANY years (or decades) and do the job...with some minor repairs and upkeep.

The low cost makers are Century, SBI (Osburn, Drolet and others), Englander and even Napoleon and some others - Pleasant Hearth is a new one, and US Stoves makes some low cost models.

If I were you, I would look at firebox size as one of the main guides.....that is, does the size properly fit your needs. Then look at the clearances to walls, etc.

Of course, add in the chimney, etc.

This is really one part of the industry which has changed in the last decade - pretty amazing, really. It used to be that you could not get a decent mid-or large EPA stove at a low price, but now there are scads of them. Even some of the highest end brands have come out with lower-cost models...for instance, years ago Travis (Avalon, Lopi) came out with something priced below a grand. It's probably over that now, but still worth looking at if you have local dealers.

Stoves are somewhat like furniture - that is, we have GREAT furniture in our house from Ikea (a 600 sofa, for instance, with all-cotton covers).....which we've had for 20 years. We also have some of that heavy duty stuff made of yellow pine (I forget the store name, but it was a large chain that sold only that bullet-proof solid yellow pine stuff).......

And, like furniture, you can get something purely function...for a cabin, or you can decide you want an "inlay" or nice teak.....in the case of stoves, this means brass or gold plated, soapstone, enameled castings, etc.......

I have to say that I am impressed that the marketplace has been able to build stoves that are just not for those who take out a home equity loan or drive a new Volvo to buy them. If oil and energy prices stay up as they are, we are going to need to have price points at every level to help solve our energy issues!

WOW, what a perfect location for a stove...

First I apolize for my non existant skills with photo editing
Many here may disagree but,

With out a doubt this is what I would do

I would add in what ever code requires for support for ceiling and install a Lopi endeavor size, or larger stove of you choice to the existing chimney

Well... it's far from perfect, but this is what I managed to come up with using a Lopi Endeavor...

Thank you for posting that, I was just using the Endeavor as a "size" example, and I woulld turn it either a 1/4 or half turn .

Hi Lisa.. welcome to the site. +1 on the idea of utilizing the chimney... As someone who just did an install this summer, the Class A chimney can get expensive. I spent more on my piping than I did on the Hearth and Stove combined. I think its a great idea to get the stove, even if you can't install it now. I'd put out of your mind the thought of getting heat from it this year, which will give some time to shop. My recommendation would be to frequent this site and look for deals. Soon you will start to know the stoves.. pros and cons.. and make the most educated decision you can. Meanwhile, keep your eyes open for a good deal on CraigsList/ebay, local classifieds.. or a floor model.. There are a lot of good folks willing to help answer any questions about stoves you may find in your price range. Inventory will be cleared soon enough.. If you are patient you can find a pretty fantastic stove for short money.

Also +1 on getting your wood ready for next year. I got my wood last June and it wasn't nearly seasoned enough for my first year of burning.

I looked around at the inserts listed in the GA area and didn't see anything special. Also, you can't just put in any old insert in there. It needs to be approved for installation in a ZC fireplace. Did you get the make/model of your unit? Door opening height?

Hubby says I can't mess with the fireplace! LOL!!! Has to be a freestanding stove in the corner of the room.

I''d end up divorced if I did that, then I"d have nobody to haul the wood.

YOu can still get a 30 for $669 and free delivery. Just plug in different zip codes on the home depot site. Several people have done it in the last few weeks. I got mine a week ago. $669 + Tax $709 total with tax delivered to your door.
I would recommend the 30 over the 13 as there is only about $100 difference in the price and the 30 is twice as big, will heat twice as much space, for twice as long IMO.

How do I do this? I selected a few neighboring home depot stores, my zip code is 30513, and they all say $999.00? I'd LOVE to get one for $700.00.

I am a prepper also. That changes things in my mind. The first thing is do not go to small you can always build a small fire in a stove but the stove will only be able to heat so much especially if you want to make this your sole heat source in future. With that in mind I would stay with the englander 30 or a stove of that size.
Your fireplace is an good spot for the new stove. As many here have said you have to investigate this fireplace and find out all you can. What size is the flue [inside chimney diameter], what are the dimensions of the opening without the fireplace in it? I am thinking you might be able to put the stove right inside. There would only be one side that looked great as the backside would show in kitchen but you could just put a screen there. Main thing is this spot would distribute the heat very efficiently. We will wait for your measurements. Best of Luck.

Ah, another prepper! Yea, the stove is top of my survival gear list at the moment. The fireplace is important too tho, I want to be able to use it for cooking, sterilizing, roasting meat and food.........always need open fire.

Are you a serious prepper or just getting stuff as you go along?

How about if you guys replaced the current fireplace with a high-efficiency ZC fireplace? It seems like that would be a win-win: still have a fireplace, like your husband wants, AND it would be an efficent heater that doesn't suck all heat up the chimney. Several options include Fireplace Xtrordinair's Model 36 Elite or Model 44 Elite, or Heat N' Glo's North Star.

I also believe someone posted a link to a HE see-through fireplace earlier in the thread, so you wou;ldn't even have to sacrifice the see-through aspect of the fireplace!

Yes, I'm a newcomer to Richmond, VA, but my wife frequently mentions the furniture made by that company ("This End Up"). We have a lot of alleys here, where folks put their unwanted furniture, for scroungers or for heavy trash pickup. I've found several pieces that I've refinished and taken to my cabin...they'll outlast a nuclear war!

Yea, I think that would be just as expensive as a wood stove.........lol. I"m kinda partial to getting a stove, just trying to find the right one for the right price is the tricky part.

I agree 100 percent with your assessment, seems like money is tight and they would be able to put something there, right smack in the middle of the house that would make heating bills nonexistant adn witht he right air movement also make the loft a nice enjoyable spot

Welcome to the fourms, lisa, always nice to see a new member of the Sistahood :)

Now, if you're selling jewelry, what's the other half doing, while insisting a stove some where else, if I may be so bold.

His social security check feeds us, and he does everything else around here, so no complaints here! :)

Plus, he already sold off his stuff earlier to help pay for moving expenses. I have a good guy!

Allrighty, then, carry on :)

FYI, I think a stove where the FP is, is the way to go. I have an insert in a room with 2' of wall on each side, and then 3' doorways and it's a PITA to move the heat around the walls and into the rest of the house. I shoulda got a stove for the main house, not the insert. But we get the job done.

I just ordered a 30 NC from Home Depot online. 650 plus tax. Free shipping to my place. My local store was not having that price. Thanks to tips here, I changed my home HD to watertown, NY for the purchase. The gold plated version is $1899.00 at the same store.

Best of luck with your purchase and install. You won't regret it.
