Just bought a greenwood 100 made in 2009. Going to put it in a one car detatched garage between the house and the detatched 6 car garage. wood boiler to house will be 55 feet underground and 35 feet to existing oil fired boiler. Wood boiler to garage is 55 feet underground and 5 feet to the modine. Would also like to heat the pool where it enters the garage.
Thanks for this site I read for atleast 2 days and so many different solutions to things. I see that eveysystem is a little different. This is going to be fun

IM in the middle of installing my second system...one mistake i made was putting a tee to my insulated underground line that went to my pool. Despite being installed in a insulated box, the heat loss from this junction is very high..its best to run lines back to the boiler.

good luck on your install this is a great place for help

What size/type of piping are you planning on using?

Check the stickies at the top of the forum. There's one on underground lines and a couple on plumbing approaches.

One piece of advice: Do everything you can to get at least a year ahead on firewood - two years is better. Dry wood gives more heat per cord and works better in any boiler. Even if you have to buy some dry to start, do that and harvest the next year's wood from your land now.

In a Greenwood Boiler, do not burn split wood!! Greenwood's like big rounds and will actually burn quite dirty if you try burning splits...On start up a couple splits are OK to get the rounds going...

Thanks guys have lots of questions. Have been looking at the logstor pipe in 1" since it is actually 1" inside diameter I think I can get the flow I will need. Does anyone see a problem with going directly from the wood furnace into the house and putting a 70 plate heat exchanger in the house next to my oil fired unit? Then off of a T at the boiler go with the run into the garage. I would have to put a t coming from supply and return from the wood boiler with a t009 taco for the house and another t009 for garage loop. How do you normally stop short cycling? With check valves or something different? Do you think I should leave the circulators from the wood furnace running all the time or should they be cycled? If it is an open system do I need a battery backup? I was thinking that if it overfires it will just boil up into the tank since it will be open it wont build up pressure? Does anyone know if you harvest from 38 acres if it will always replenish itself fast enough?

I can get free wood, but it is not free with the hassle of getting it. I find it cheaper to buy by the semi load.

Will the wood replenish itself? Yes but you have to have a good plan. In Maine the rule of thumb is that 1 acre will grow 1 cord per year. So theorectically you can harvest 1cord per year per acres of wooded land.

I would check out the flow rates for the 1". It might not flow enough btu's when it is called for. Then the dreaded idle and cold house.

Thanks willman, I did the calculations and you are correct I should be using a 1.25 inside diameter line to get the 0007 to pump 10 gal a minute Ty you saved me from putting in 2 larger pumps $300.

Insulate the lines with spray foam for less heat loss. How long of a run you planning? Underground?

Im planning on a 55 foot underground run to the house and a 55 foot underground run to the garage. I was going to purchase the logtor pre insulated pipe at 1 1/4".

Nice stuff, not cheap.

Thanks for your help everyone. Got it going this weekend and have been oil Free since Friday night.. Ill post some pics when I get the shop cleaned up.. Best Regards.

Details as well as pics. We love details. Was that one of the leftover greenwoods?
