Every since our first winter in this place we have heated with wood. A couple years ago I realized if I ever got badly hurt or died my wife would probably not be able to go up to the hills and cut, haul, and split 5 cords of wood so I put in central heat. Last year I was real sick for a couple months and we used the heat. Our electric bill went from $75 to $250. I was waiting for some questions to why we were using so much but we never got anything. We bought the house as a foreclosure due to the previous owners going to prison. They had a big garden in the basement and they used a lot of electricity.

Thanks for the laugh . . . so did the realtor sell you on the "tanning" room or "indoor greenhouse" features of the new house? :)

No they just included all the moldy sheetrock and messed up wiring. I spent the my first two weeks here hauling load after load of that basement to the dumpster then spraying everything down with bleach. I did however have a lot of copper wire to take to the scrap yard.

I switched to wood 4years ago for heating my shop which can not be allowed to freeze under any circumstances. for the first year, not sure how well the wood stove would work out, I left the gas on, but turned it off myself at the meter, then drained the gas lines in the shop before starting the heating season.

that was in 07-08

it worked so well, in 08/09 I called the gas company 15x to come turn off the gas at my shop because they were charging me $20 a month 'rent' for the meter even though the meter was 'off'

Finally, I told them at around 10am one day that they have until 10am tomorrow (the next day) to come take their meter off my building or I will go out there and cut it off my building with my sawzall and deliver it to them.

Needless to say with in 90minutes, a guy was her to 'officially' turn off the gas and put a lock on the meter.

Having sold real estate for many, many years I know exactly what 'type' of garden you refer to! :)

The electric company put a new digital meter on my house after my first year of only heating with wood. I wonder if they ever figured out what the problem was?

I am sure at some point they would have realized something wasn't right and stuck me with a helluva bill. I was better off to fight for a new meter and take a minor ass raping then let it be and get bent in half with no lube.

The gas company here is so retarded that I had to MAKE them change the meter.

Something broke in the meter and for 3 months in a row this summer I had bills that were showing no gas usage. I knew something wasn't right (still using gas to heat water and cook) so I called them. At first they wanted to charge me to come test the meter, but in the end I was able to get a workorder for them to come out.

They came out and tested the meter and said it was fine.

Next 2 bills, still zero usage.

I called them again and they sent the guy out again. I happened to come home as he was going to leave, said the meter was working fine. I asked him how I could be using gas for several months and the meter hadn't moved??
I fired the boiler, turned on the cookstove and huh, guess what, meter isn't spinning. It would spin when he opened the line and let a bunch of gas out, but not with reg usage.

The replaced the meter... and then charged me some b/s rate of the gas I should have used and also tried to throw a "fine" down as well. That got removed when I marched down there with a list of the calls I had made and ME having to force them to fix the damn thing.

Frigging idiots!
Hmmm???? You are getting free gas because of a broken meter and you have to call them, twice, to come out and fix it.
Yeah, they sure are idiots. ;-P

Its really the OIL COMPANY that im lovin to break up with.
