I got out back for the first time in a while and did some stacking. I wanted to get most of this done over the winter but with my parents passing in Oct. of last year I have been busy cleaning out their house and getting things ready for auction.....Heres what I have in store for me when I get around to cutting/splitting and stacking

Very sorry to here about your parents. Looks like some nice looking rounds.

The big steel frame is part of "BIG UGLY by DADDYBUILT" . My dad build the splitter over 30 years ago and tore it down to the frame about 15 years and "remodeled it" to include a boom to drag/move heavy objects. The big I-Beam off the back has a winch underneath with approx 250' of 5/8 cable. The winch is powered by a twin cylinder 18HP briggs. If that wasn't enough power he could use the 4 cyl in his '56 willys jeep to power the winch. The splitter is powered by a single cylinder hand crank Wisconsin engine that dates to around the late 30s /early 40s. The splitter was built out of scrap material...hence the name "Big Ugly" Dads theory was go big or go home.

As far as stacking the rounds I stacked them because I didnt have time to split them right way. I dont take it personal, its a preference of mine I try to keep things somewhat neat so my neighbors dont B**ch at me.....I am a hillbilly stuck in the city.

Thanks Zap...it sucks but theyre together and happy. I couldnt imagine one of them going on without the other....I'm happy theyre together.

It looks yummy to me! I have to 'stack twice' around here also. You do what you have to do when you live in the burbs.

I stack rounds also. When a tree comes down the first order of business is to get it bucked up and out of the soil. Then when time allows I will split.

How about some pics of that?

Jeff, what you have gone through can really be tough sledding. Sorry to hear the sad news but as you stated, they are still together, and in a great place too!

Lots of us have stacked rounds and later go back to do the splitting. Here's a picture of some splitting done in 2009. I cut the wood during the winter months and wait until the snow is gone or almost gone before doing the splitting. There are about 9 cord in this picture.

This is what it looked like at the beginning.

Then came the stacking.

This is the start of this winter's cutting. It is waiting to be split and then stacked. You will also no doubt notice that I am not very careful in the stacking of the wood before it is split. If that falls over, no problem. The splitter moves very easily right where we want it.

You also probably noticed that we split wood the natural and easy way by setting the splitter in the vertical position. I'm not going to lift those logs again just to split them!

Nice piles of wood. I always end up stacking 2 or 3 times. Better empty that wheelbarrow before the skeeters start hatching.

Sounds like a very interesting machine. You GOTTA post some pics of this ugly daddy thingy.... Pleeeeeeeesssse....

Do you consider it a backyard or a wood lot? I am jealous of those stacks that is for sure. If you need help with splitting let me know and I can swing by!

Holy Toledo... thats a sweet pile o' wood!!

And if you live in the 'city'....then I must live in an 'urban metropolis'....but its really the suburbs.

Anyway, sweet pile...I love having rounds that need splitting...I always know I have something fun to look forward to. %-P

Here are some pictures I took in October. I will have to look thru some older pics and see if I have any with the winch in operation. I know I have a pic somewhere with the winch holding up the front end of an old F100 pickup. As you can see its big and its Ugly, hence the name

I might take you up on that offer Tim

I'm not sure what to call it other than heat. I shoveled my elderly neighbors sidewalk this morning and she met me at the door with a thank you note addressed to "Paul Bunyan"...what is she trying to say

Jeff

wow I am surprised at the lack of comments on "Big Ugly". I was sure somebody would say something about this contraption

Jeff

Okay. It's ugly.

I'm still trying to figure out why there is so much there for something that should just have an engine, some hydraulics, and a ram+wedge. I need more pictures, what else does it do?

edit: ok, reread and I see it has a boom and winch. that's crazy. and it's ugly. you should paint it so it lasts another 30 years. Kubota orange is the first color that comes to mind.
