It was time to caulk the old shower again - most of this work is prep....spent an hour or more getting everything ready.

I had 1/2 tube of GE's best silicone caulk in the shop - was still flowing, so used it....went on very well.

A day later it had not dried. Two days later it had not dried. I did some googling and it turns out they are serious about expiration dates on these products........

Removed it all - still completely soft, and redid it with a new tube. 5 hours later and it is hard enough to use.

Just a word to the wise - sometimes being TOO frugal bites you in the arse.

I did the same thing. Non-cured due to expiration is a real gross greasy pain to remove.... had to redo the kitchen sink....

Yup, I too have experienced "bad caulk". I never bothered to look for an expiration date though.

Been there done that. Open or not, much after the expiration date it will not set up. I always check the exp date when I buy, in case the store stocked them to long.

Again hearth.com proves to offer so much more information than just woodstove related stuff . . . never knew caulk has an expiration date.

Good Advise!!

ditto for me.
Had some unopened tubes sitting in the basement.
One flowed and did not set, the other didn't even come out of the tube.
Had to buy new tubes to finish the job.

I just tried to use a few tubes of some 4 year old firestop caulk - they felt soft. Turns out they had set up enough to not be usable and i was 2 tubes short for the project.
