We just got our first fuel bill since we installed the Blaze King. Before the king we used 303 gallons, after we only used 133! AND that was in -45 weather. THANK YOU BLAZE KING. P.S. After 5 weeks I let the stove go out long enough to clean the ashes. We were gone for the weekend so it was a good time to let it go out. It is up and running again. It also makes the house feel much more comfortable and livable and warm. Oh, we also heat our hot water with the oil so even in the summer we use some oil.

And ya wonder why more people dont burn wood. A little work and investment up from for that kind of savings and independence is well worth it. What do you figure your ROI is going to be?

People don't want to work for it. They just want to flip a switch.

Congrats on the stove, hotprinter!

People will start to be willing to work for it once their heating bill gets up to $10K for the winter.

I doubt it. they will whine and go on govt assistance.

I'm always shocked to see 300 gallons of usage in Alaska. I think there was a 400 gallon last year. Those numbers would be considered low in upstate NY and we don't have -45F well, -45C is about the same thing. I wonder if it varies with the warm current coming in over the ocean. Maybe you have shorter, sharper winters? Better construction? Although I bet a majority of the houses aren't brand new up there.

Looks good, hotprinter. :) I turned off my oil furnace that did the hotwater last fall and I'm happy with using electric on the hot water now. But I'd like to get away from that, too, before I get done.

I'm wondering why you had to let the stove go out to clean the ashes?

Much easier and doesn't make as much of a mess to clean when the embers are 90000*

Ouch on the fuel oil price. I need to buy another 250 gals and it's $3.64 right now. The last time I bought was about a month ago and it was $3.10

The 303 was for one month?

At those fuel costs why not buy more BKs and make cutting and splitting your new part time job :=)

Thats 300 gallons for 6 weeks. We have 8 months of heating here. Are you saying in New York you use more than 300 gallons in 6 weeks?

Thats still an attractive price for my area. We have been just sitting under $5 a gallon. 30-35 gallons/120liters has been our average yearly usage the past 5yrs. This year our house used the furnace and no stove running for 2 months. I will find out next fall when I top the tank up what we actually used. I'm gonna take a break for a couple of seasons on wood production and see if I can get through the next 3 years with what I got. Maybe in a couple of years I will get a couple of logging truck loads and start over. No more scrounging out of the bush for me. Saving myself for the family and vacations. My spinal surgery has woken me up and has burnt me out at the same time. :red:

hotprinter- feel's good huh? Wait a few years, you'll have everything paid for, and then some. I've saved a bunch myself. - (N-of-60- hope the back hangs in there, you'll be back out scrounging before you know it- good luck.)

The fuel isn't use for heating my home. Temp heat in building, gen set, equipment, etc.

wow 300 gallons in 6 weeks!! man thats one explensive place to heat! how many sq feet? what temp you kept it at with fuel oil?

looks like taht was from dec to march

I have used NO fuel oil this winter; none! And it's been in the -30s °F a few times, and quite a few -20s °F excursions. The house is empty for 11 hrs each weekday, just load up the BK before work and let it do it's thing! A controllable big firebox has no substitute. I am going full 24 hr days right now between reloads, as it has warmed up quite a bit. Syrup season is in full swing here! And steelhead are just around the corner, too. Some are already here (have been all winter, I just haven't pursued them; I like the stove lots better than wading an almost frozen river). Anyway, did I mention no fuel oil bills?

No, the 300 gallons would be fore a heating season here. I misread the post. We hit -23 this winter, but that's far from normal.
