well, road limits are in effect throughout the area. always a good sign.. still had -8f this morning! the "melt rings" are starting to appear in the snow around the trees. this afternoon, upper 30's/lower 40's. the snow we got this weekend is almost all gone. then it can get back to melting the reserve from winter. with the days above freezing and the nights below freezing, the sap will start running! maple syrup! the first sap is always the highest sugar content; it takes less amount of sap to boil down to get your syrup.
even had time to make a load of wood today! but i had to throw it over the snowbank to get it close to the wood pile when i unloaded it.
still no robins, K...

yeah i got the spring fever pretty bad.
snow melt was good this weekend got a little rain which really helps, but still have a good 5 foot snow bank in front yard.
amazing how good 35-40 F feels after this winter. even better when the sun is out!!!

Going quickly here . . . I was hoping to get one last snowmobile ride in this weekend . . . but even if I trailer the sled up north I'm thinking there may not be enough good snow to make the trails worth it.

Yooperdave it sounds like your weather is about like ours but, of course, you are generally colder and lots more snow. The frost laws went into effect here about 2 weeks ago.

There is a south facing ridge by our house and most of the snow has melted there but still lots in other places. Not much bare ground overall yet but hope to get more real soon as the warm weather is forecast to start with 44 today and then 3 days of 50's!!! Spring at last!

yooperdave, the deer have been checking out those melt rings up here. They're eating the bark off of some dead sugar maple by our house also.

i still see alot of people riding up here. i didnt have a sled this winter so couldnt give you many details.
but what you can see from the road looks ok.

spent the day at the cottage getting it prepped for the new cabinets and install. place looks nice but will really take off once the cabinets are in! then its the floors turn...
anyhoo, went out on the ice again (two weeks ago was the last time i measured the thickness) this time, instead of using an ice spud, i used a hand powered ice auger to make the hole. the ice is 24" thick...solid ice, with no pockets of slush or the like. i actually thought it would be less thick than that. there a still a few ice shacks left, but the majority of them are gone. actually had a couple snowmobilers today, on the lake. the trails are in rough shape, though.

Thanks for the update . . . I may luck out and get one final ride in this weekend.

60's and even 70's here for the next couple days. Won't be burning for at least a week.

Time to get some outdoor projects done.

I had to go out yesterday and did see my first robins and red winged blackbirds. Then late yesterday my wife came in and said there was a robin out here. Spring! They say we should hit 50 today. Hooray!

1/2 load signs are on the county roads, and the maple trees are tapped. I even saw about 2 dozen deer early this am scratching for some left over grain in the field down the line. They looked good, but not much bigger than a large dog.
Bring on Spring.

You guys up North sure have COLD weather, down here in East Texas today 17MAR11 its getting up to 75 and Friday -Sat 80 , we going to our lake house and crappie fish and catfish(ya'll have those up there or is it to cold for them in frozen water) our lake had 1/2 inch ice close to the shore this December and January , we may take our electric blanket off the bed this weekend cause its gonna get warmer from now on. ya'll be careful and safe

stopped at the cottage to do some more work. the lake has all the snow melted and there is water puddling up all over the place. i measured the ice again (used the same hole that i got 24" measurement last time) and to my surprise...it is still 24" thick! i was expecting maybe an inch or two less. one of the holes that i drilled a couple days ago was acting like a floor drain...you should have seen that surface water rushing into the hole!!!

the cabinets i ordered on sunday were going to be 7-10 days out. imagine my surprise when, after only 2 days, they were at the store waiting to be picked up! i got the bases in place today...tomorrow, a little plumbing and then permanent attach the bases. then the uppers; countertop and sink; and finally the utility cabinet. then the floor........

no robins yet.

Dave, we hit 67 degrees yesterday!!!!! Needless to say, there is not much snow left now. We probably won't see another day like that for some time.
