Hello

Well it is almost the end of the second season for the Avalon Astoria install and some wear and tear has left the hearth with some nicks.

The hearth was made out of 2x4s with pine trim and the front pine trim board is nicked. See Pics.

Not sure how this happened but maybe a heavy metal baffle falling from the cleaning process or something like that chipped the edge and removed some wood and paint.

I still have the Benjamin Moore Latex Semi-Gloss paint. The color is called Hidden Valleybut looks like Chocolate Brown paint.

Any suggestions for repair?

Adds charactor! :) Use some touch up paint and its all good(just to protect the wood).

If you "MUST" repair, Wood filler will do a good job.

You could also get a piece of corner molding to go over the top and sides to hide the all thumbs moment ;-) .

Router with a roundover or a chamfer bit? Repaint afterwards?

Hello

Wow, great ideas! I like the router and molding ideas!! Thanks you guys!!!

I just put some wood filler in for hardening tonight.

Maybe a protective metal trim piece! You got me thinking now. :)

Get over it and move on....... geez

If I had nicks in my "wood" I would be wanting "fill-her" too!

Just filling in for krooser while he is on the road(he made me do it really)! :)

X2 with Ladderlieu's suggestion of using a router on the edging, as long as you can get access to all the side edging before the router bumps up against the wall.

That is part of the problem, there is a lally column on the right side. See pic below:
Also there is rope light under the bottom edge, so the board is only nailed in around the center and at the corners.
So routering the corners would weaken where they attach and hit a nail.

So after a little wood filler and paint it looks better!

Thanks but still considering some metal protective trim next time I go to Lowe's to see what they have.
Note: Paint is still wet in picture.

How about a nice Applique or wood carvings on the front trim board to spruce it up??
Like this and paint it to match the wall >> http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=19229&filter=Applique

Don, what is the material in the background. The 3 vertical pieces?

Maybe that around the edge of the trim on the front and sides?

Just a thought.

Those background strips are cut tile so they would not work here. However I was at Lowes today and found some 8' Steel Corner and Trust Washer Lath Screws!! Perfect!

Do you think I should paint using some black rustoleum??

Personally, I like it the way it is. Goes with the tile color.

Great Job, Don!!

The stove is black, the grates under the base is black. Now you have 3 colors plus the colors of the floor in your base. I would go with all black except for the fact that what ever caused those marks on the wood edge will also scrape paint off from the metal trim and you will have to touch that up! How does it look when the rope lites are on? What ever you decide, I am sure it is going to be just fine. Nice set up.

Looks good Don. Now you need to find a
Project for the left over 94 screws.

Despite what Don claimed in a prior post, I suspect that his boss already has a very long list of things that will use up any supplies he may have ;-) .
