Feeling the Heat

I actually turned on the oil burner today. The temps are well above freezing, and look to be for the foreseeable future. It seems hardly worth lighting the stove for the few minutes you really need it. Anyway, I've had the same tank of oil for a few years now, probably time to burn some off..... (never thought I'd want to burn off oil) :cheese:

Yes, we are getting there. About 50* yesterday and had an early morning fire. The solar gain put the house at 80* by 1pm - a tad too hot! Just the single fire until this morning and woke up to 65* in the house. Decided on a much smaller fire this am, as we are supposed to be in the low 50's today with some Sun. Going through a lot less wood now - shoulder season is definitely here - finally! Heard my first phoebe this morning and woodcock were calling in the field 3 night ago - good signs! Cheers!

Last night was the first night this year we let the stove go out. Sure it will be back on in a day or 2 but it was in the 50s here last night and mid 60s in the day.

I thought we were there to but only 26* this morning. It was hot in the house last night with a fire so I let it go out. It was chilly this morning built another fire. Looks like cooler temps next week. That will be good for the maple sap. We didn't have a very good year last year.

I could hardly believe yesterday. Our forecast for Wednesday was for 50 and we got to 56. They were really confused about what we'd get yesterday. The forecast kept changing from a high of 60 then 63 then finally Wed. night they said 59 for Thursday. Thursday morning they were back to 60....and we topped out at 67! Fantastic except for that wind. Needless to say, we lost most of the snow. Hooray!

Like wkpoor, last night was our first night without a fire. I hope that becomes really frequent now.

Still burning . . . usually one fire in the morning and one at night . . . temps are holding well at night and during the day soon.

Saw some daffodils poking up through the ground at work.

That said . . . I'm planning one final snowmobile ride this weekend.

We had a small fire last night and let it go out. A front went through overnight and I woke up to 49F so no fire now. Daffodils, hyacinths and plums are in bloom. Bumblebees are out. Spring is here for sure.

Good, im tired of fartin around with the stove anyway. Im ready for some AC

Still burning here. 30* right now though, but got close to a foot of snow yesterday.

Windows open for the first time today. Fluke south wind has us at 75 degrees this afternoon. No sun. Just looked at the map and the only cloud in the eastern half of the country is right over us all day. Things cool back down again starting tomorrow. This day in 1993 we were still digging out from under the "Blizzard of the Century".

Yep, 60's high today! Boston saw 70 for the first time this year! :gulp: Wow! I wish we were on the coast today. I can't wait to go to the beach for the weekend. The sand at our feet and the smell of woodfire cooked burgers on the grill. Ahhhhh! As much as I love the fire, I will not miss loading the stove untill it gets cold enough to do so! Camp fires every other weekend and fires outback in the yard!

Still burning here but not always 24/7. I've been sick with the flu for a week now so not getting much sleep through the night but at least I can keep a small fire and coals going.

I finally got some decent sleep last night and so the fire went out. Knocked off from work at noon and started a fire when I got home. It stayed below freezing all day and is going down to -13°C overnight.

Anyway... the end is probably near.

Ahh, yes. I was just thinking to myself "happiness is a cold stove". Then the sun went down, we closed the windows, it got cold, and now im waiting for the stove to start putting out usable heat.

Temps have been dropping all day. At 45 I started up the stove again. Hope this isn't the pattern until July.

Yeah I just closed the windows to hold on to some of today's heat. Stove probably lights off at sundown tomorrow. I say every year about this time that I am just gonna run the heaters and eat the electric bill. And I never do.

The last storm blew down two majorly large white oaks on the place so here we go again.

"Riggs, I am getting too old for this chit!".

In the late 80's and early 1990's the stuff seemed to just keep coming every winter in the East. Now we get hammered every once in a while but the upper East Coast seems to get it all the time. We get more cold than we used to get but the snow just falls all at once every three or four years.

When I was younger seemed like we always got snow, now its rolling dice... this year a lot came in a short time and everyone was freaking out .. but really who would have thought we would see grass a week ago when on v-day we had about 4ft on the ground?... weird

We still have pretty much a full snow cover with the exception of the septic tank and various paths I keep open. Happiness is seeing the tops of the garden benches and well casing.

Here it seems to be the opposite. 5,10,15 years ago didn't seem like we could ever get a decent winter snowfall wise. now the past 5 years it seems like we just more each year. this year we've had 127" so far

One of our better weather wienies put it all in context the other day. He said that as far as "average" temps go we usually only see those two days in a year. And that it applies to precipitation too.

Played golf today, high 60's and 20 mph winds. Warm though. Never would have thought, even 3 weeks ago, I would be playing golf on 3/18. Good conditions and not too soggy. Have not been burning during the day but 2-3 days in March. Took a few nights off this week.

Hope that wind was to your back on the drives.

got the boiler doing the job for the second night. now that most of the snow is gone i went out around to estimate the damage from this baaaaad snowy winter. after shoveling off the roof i got little pieces of shingle everywhere. thought i collapsed the front steps but thank good no, but did collapse the trampoline. i bent it with snow off the roof and then last weeks heavy rain put the icing on the cake. fires at night for the next couple of weeks then the vacation from the stove. just thinking about it, i think i need a beer :)
