Spent some time on this wood today, and I think I may have wasted some time. It has some purple color towards the outer edges and is about 1/2 the wieght of the Walnut I was working on. What do you think?

Tulip or Yeller Poplar. Liriodendron tulipifera... Not a high btu wood, but it'll burn and season fast.

Ugh, that was what I was afraid of. Not the worst outcome for time spent in the woods, but when I think of how there are black walnuts and red oaks awaiting my efforts, it is time lost.

Don't think of it that way. There are few trees that consistently grow like telephone poles. Yellow poplar can be the tallest one. That makes easy splitting.

Tulip isn't all that far from Black Walnut in BTUs, and it seasons faster than oak. Not too bad if you ask me. I'd have taken oak if I had the choice, and probably walnut too, but Tulip is OK.

Tulip is fun to saw! Big Rooster Tails.

I agree - definitely tulip poplar.

its not terrible wood and it splits very easy
