Hello

I just picked up some New England Wood Pellets in a Clear Bag at East Coast Lumber in Hamstead NH.

Has anyone tried these? What does the clear bag mean?

I believe that they are this years batch. I burnt a ton of NEWP in the same bag. They were a little ashy but burnt well other than that.

Don, does the bag say what plant it came from? Just wondering if those are from the new plant in Deposit, NY.

Deposit is not open yet should be soon. They will most likely use the same bag as Schuyler is using that bag also.

My 4 tons that I ordered last spring/summer had both the clear bags as well as the old solid ones. Not mixed on the same pallet. I haven't really noticed much of a difference between the two bags. For the price I got them at I was pleased with their performance.

Looks like they just come up with a newer bag that shows their pellets better.

East Coast Lumber is my closest pellet location :)

I've had issues with newp causing my stove to groan/moan related to the auger, and the ash buildup meant much more frequent cleaning for me, given the limits of my stove. I've love to hear about others with newp experiences, in particular with these clear bag batches. I have a full ton in the barn that I haven't even opened yet. I'm inclined to say my stove doesn't like them, but it does seem okay with some other brands.

Burning up the last of my okies first, and trying other brands as I find them... okies for me ash wise have been winning hands down, with green team/maine's choice doing well also.

Hello neighbor

I will let you know how the clear bags work in my Avalon. I suspect I will not have a problem since I burned a ton of NEWPs last year. If you want to try another good Canadian brand pellet then come down to Dodge Grain in Salem for some Logik-e pellets. If you go on their web site and get on the new email list you will get a coupon for $10 off ANYTHING in the store. That means 2 bags of Logic-e for $0.89 a bag. Worth a try if you are around here!

Yes, we've had problems this year with NEWP that were produced 03/10 & the tan bag. These were recently swapped out for the ones made late 2010 in the clear bag. We tried 5 of the clear bags & didn't have the issues we were having with the older production date (which you can find marked on one of the upper corners of the bag).

We're still burning some leftover 2009 pellets. The 2010 pellets are definitely ashier than in the past & the stove gets dirtier, but there is a big difference in the pellets produced later in the year - they are more uniform & color & size & not as much dust in the bags. Maybe the purpose of the clear bags was to allow the pellets themselves to be seen as they've had issues with their pellets. Even though NEWP paid dealer to replace our pellets, we won't be buying them again.

Other than burning a little dirtier when on low heat and with the same low ash content this year the clear bags been fine for my Mini. I have almost burned two tons this winter. It also could be they used different trees, species ash content varies even with hard wood. However I noticed the lenght of the pellets varies quite a bit, no problems with it, just required a bit of tweaking with the air.

Hello

I burned 2 of the clear bags last night. Good heat, very little fines and no problems.

The issue I seem to run into is that if the ash produced is "heavy", it tends to fill up the burn pot instead of being lifted by the air flow into the general burn chamber, resulting in shutdown/cleaning times almost every two-three bags. So almost every other day...

But with other brands, the ash seems to be light enough to make it out of the burnpot and thus less frequent shut downs. Hard to say if it a volume or a weight or a 'stickiness' issue.

I had no auger groaning issues with the tan bags I burned my first year, this groaning seems to be exclusive to some of my clear bags. Hard to say how constant it is, but I'll be keeping detailed logs with this next ton of newp if I burn it all....

We'll see if it keeps waking me from snoozing in the chair near the stove ;)

groaning auger.
Heavy ash may be starving burn of air creating carbon buildup on auger or auger tube, chip it off.
OR
Empty fines box.

NEWP caught lots of flack(from me included) because of the long pellets from the NY mill. This is a way of showing the buyer the issues are corrected. Well you can see the pellets plain as day! I have seen it by other brands that have an issue or problems. They start putting them in clear bags so the end user can see they are good.

Personally I like the all clear bags myself.

I had picked up ten bags of these clear bag NE Pellets last week at Middleton Lumber in Dover NH
Wife opened them up and put into 5 gallon buckets and said they had very few fines and they smell good.
They are all pretty much uniform in size 1/2" to 3/4 dated 12/16/2010.
Will burn them tomorrow since hopper is full of MWP (red cabin bag) which do burn nice.

Same here on the heavier ash this year with the 2010 pellets. More chaff too. I find the new clear bags rip open easier (unintentionally) if I'm not careful when I pick it up. I get them at a good price, so I'll live with it.

I am impressed with the NEWP in clear bag, they burned hotter than the MWP (red cabin bag) with low ash,
I will purchase again, good deal would be to have 2 tons of each NEWP for mid winter and MWP (red cabin bag) for fall and spring.

Do the NEWP's still have what plant they were bagged at on the bag?

In the past New Hampshire was superior over NY. Just curious to what plant you all have.

Yes they still have where they were made marked on the bag. They also added a nice little chart for BTUs and moisture and ash. I like the look of the new bags myself. When I buy newp they usually come from the Jaffrey NH plant. Last summer the dealer had a batch from the New York Plant. Im thinking of splitting my tons for the year. getting a ton and a half of newp and a ton and a half of the cubex. Been happy with both but it also depends what the prices are gonna be for the early buy.

Yes they do say what plant,
I just did not look at the bottom of the bag.
They are from Jaffrey and dated 12/16/2010
They do burn nice and glass stays cleaner much longer.

I've burned about 18 bags of the NEWP in the clear bag. I got two tons when I purchased my M55C FPI about a month ago. I'm finding that I get a lot of ash build up in the burn pot, to the point were the adgitator can no longer push it out the sides of the pot, this then forms large clinkers on both sides of the burn pot. With this, the slots in the burn pot then start to get packed with ash. The ash in the ash pan is very dark, almost black and has texture similar to that of a very fine sand. I'm guessing it's carbon.

I am running the stove in HIGH/LOW mode with a Filtrete programmable thermostat controlling the burn cycles. I have adjusted the auger trim, combustion air, temp setting in the HIGH mode and also the temp and swing of the thermostat. The only thing that seemed to have a noticable impact was lowering the heat level in HIGH mode from 4 to 3. Increasing the combustion air help only slightly. I have been having to clean out the burn pot every two days or so in order to keep a good flame in the burn pot.

I purchased 3 bags of Bearfoots and 3 bags of Okanagans to try out and see if this helps with the ash build up. I've heard realy good stuff about the Okanagans.

BradH70 does the bag have the plant name located on the bottom? Just wondering if they are NY or NH pellets.
