Tree service is making the rounds in our town (and county), trimming trees for the utility company. I had two problem trees on my property, at the edge of the road. One ~ 10" diameter white ash and similar sized dead (but solid) red oak. Walked the property with the crew chief and they will take down the trees, but that's all. I'm happy, since the trees really needed to be felled and they would have been tough to do myself with the power lines so close. Probably a 1/2 cord, but an easy get. Looks like there will be A LOT of trees coming down around town though - they are orange flagging the trees that will be cut, so in a couple weeks I'll start doing some weekend drives and looking for flagged trees. I usually have pretty good luck asking the homeowners if they want the wood once the crew takes down the trees. Hoping for a pretty good overall score. Crew said they will begin cutting in about 8 weeks - we'll see!! Cheers!

Forecast calling for excellent scrounging conditions mid to late spring!

I certainly hope so! Cheers!

Good for you. Now you get those bad trees felled and it doesn't cost you a penny. Sounds like a winner.

Little competition never hurt anyone.
Sounds like enough for 2 or more to do pretty well.
Get the trailer bearing greased up & the saw sharpened.
Maybe you'll luck out & they'll deliver, now that would be "to good to be true"
Have fun.

Oh, this could be interesting! We'll need updates from both scroungers from the day the crews start cutting 'till the last round is picked from town. Pics of each load and of your total haul when all is said and done.
10 points per cord points for style, hardship and creativity.
Winner will be crowned Scrounge-Master of Rindge, NH!

I have a feeling NH_Wood will win this one- he has a little more time than i do to bribe- I mean- approach the people in town than I do....I will give it a good effort though :)
May have to bring out the home made maple syrup.

I see a new TLC reality show in the works here. Two teams, one town...biggest pile at the end of the month wins.

People around town have called me many things- unfortunately Scrounge Master would be a significant status booster....

Maybe I'll have to get the in-laws to do some scouting for me, then snatch it all from under your noses ;)

They were cutting trees in my neighborhood last spring to widen the road, I was going to stop by on the way home from work and ask them if they could dump some of the wood in my yard. By the time I got home it was all stacked in one of my neighbors yard, he beat me to it. He got quite a bit too, pretty big score, took him a few weekends to sut and split all of it.

Who is it that puts up the orange flags? There are a ton of them around here now. I am pretty sure they are put up by the town as I spoke to a state guy and he told me of some I specifically asked about that were town flagged. But what dept would I try to reach to get a jump on these?

The tree company - Asplundh here - sent a worker (older gentleman, not a on the cutting crew) around to determine which roadside trees need felling/trimming for the utility company. He flags the trees. Asplundh sends early notices to residents letting them know of the trimming project, then stops at residences if there is a tree on their property that needs to be felled/trimmed. But....if the tree meets certain distances from the wires, they don't NEED to get final permission if they can't reach the homeowner - they'll fell/trim regardless. In this area, it's worth starting to take Sunday drives and ask folks if they want the wood - the flags are getting numerous! I have my eyes on a large sugar maple, 1 med sized cherry, and 2 med sized ash that are flagged about 200 meters from my house. Hope to stop by today! Cheers!

Rindge, NH, know it well. My son went to Franklin Pierce. Graduated in May 2010.
