Just got back from the Lowes in Epping, NH, price went up to $4.98 per bag. So that's $249 per ton, not bad but not great. They still have about 30 tons left but they said that's it for the season.

The Maine's Choice pellets I've bought at various Lowe's around New Hampshire are consistently the worst I've ever encountered. I'm planning a report to Lowe's at the end of the season in hopes that they can find a new supplier next year.

The pellets don't have that tight, shiny appearance to them. There's lots of dust and lots of soft or broken pellets. Lots of ash, clinkers, and sparks. Way more than any other brand. And a few bags over the course of the season weren't well sealed and had gotten wet inside. About the only thing they have going for them is that they're still in stock.

I reported to Lowes this week re the issues I have had with Maine's Choice. They said they had not had any other complaints.
These have been the worse pellets we have tried.

I went through about 24 bags of Maine's choice and had no problems (got them from the Epping Lowes). Now, not the hottest pellets for sure but they were fine at the time as temps were up a bit from where they are now.

These are the first complaints I've heard about them...anyone else out there with some insight, good or bad?

The problem I am having with Maine's Choice is the same as the above poster.
I just got them a few weeks ago. Prior to MC I was using Freedom Fuel. MC is very ashy ... about 3 or 4 times more than the FF pellets.
The pellets are also very dusty and they break apart easily. I am wondering if the ones I have had been wet at one point.

Hello

I have a friend who works at Home Depot. She says she cannot buy their pellets because the cheaper pellets do not work well in her stove. She has a Harmon Accentra Insert Pellet stove!

P.S. the Maine's Choice Wood Pellets work fine in my stove too.

It may just come down to a batch by batch thing. I know that when I bought a ton of Stove Chow about a month or two ago the overal reviews were "great pellet for the price" and they are, but I'll tell you, I got the dustiest ton of pellets I have ever had. Other than that they were fine.

I also went through 24 bags of Maine Woods, I thought they were a very good pellet, good heat, low dust and pretty low ash. Not the best but very good, at least in my stove.

It is true that batches do vary and what may be good before is not so good now.

However Pellet Stoves vary also! I never get clinkers with my stove. I think the square hole in the Intake Air Plenum helps to temper the intake air and I get a better burn. Actually I really know this because when I blocked that hole I got alot of caked ash in the shoulder season when the dew point was high!) Other stoves have a Burn Pot Stirrer and really keep the burn pot clean from caked ash and clinkers!!

So add a burn pot stirring rod and cut a hole in the intake air pipe inside your stove and you will never have a problem!!! LOL

What were the brand(s) that they had 30 tons of?

I picked up some Okies from east coast lumber down on 111. Burning the last bag of newp right now, I suspect it'll be the last time I buy them except to try a bag every now and again. Hearthworks on 125 seemed to have cubex, but I think they said $6/bag... no judgement, just sharing for those people in southern nh looking for a source.

I went and took a peek in 7 or 8 of the pallets and it was about a 50/50 split - American Wood Pellets (Curran I believe) and Presto logs (I've never tried them). The American Wood Pellets were in a clear bag and are a hardwood/softwood mix. I tried a few bags and they burn fine for me, good heat average ash and low dust. Seems like a good shoulder season pellet.

I picked up 24 bags and plan to pick up another 24 this weekend. I'm working my way up to 8 tons in the stash, 4 tons of main season pellets and 4 tons of shoulder season pellets. So far my overall cost per ton is $229 so I'm pretty happy.
