That's what I use. It's pretty easy, but you can't be too color blind, like me.

Don't you have it set so it regens at, like, 2 AM?

Yes 2 or 3 AM but he is up at all hours of the day. Told him to plan around it, but I don't think he is. (I'm at work during this time)

I saw a water filter pitcher at Target the other day that includes a "laboratory grade" digital probe that senses dissolved solids in parts per million. Being a gadget freak I thought that was pretty nifty. I think it was $30, more or less.

Alas, I know not what I do, but I bought one of those total dissolved meters a while ago. I'm not sure what it is for (swimming pools?) but it didn't work out for me checking the softness of the water. I think the softener process replaces one ion for another (or something like that) so that the tds remains the same.

If you ever upgrade or get a new softener, the Kinetico's usually come with dual softeners, so while one is backwashing, the other one can be used for normal use. There never is a lapse of "soft" water.
You can set it by gallons, instead of a set time also for when to re-gen.

If you go to the Water-boss website, they will mail you free test strips.

True but I don't have the room for that setup, nor $3000 to shell out when a $500 Lowe's one works fine.
