Has anybody ever used Curan?

I just bought a few bags of NEWP to see what they burned like. They are going for $219/tom here. They seem ashy and I have more carbon buildup with them, but heat output is decent. Mine have the Schulyer, NY address on them and were produced in September 2010 I believe. I am thinking of 2 tons of NEWP and 2 tons of Northern for next season.

Of that list you gave, I would almost go with Curans or maybe a mix of curan and NEWP. I know the cubex and okies are well thought of on this sight, I just won't pay that much for a ton of pellets.

Around where I live most brands are at 209...

Curran mix was a little ashy. The Curran softwoods have won the hearts of lots of my customers. I've had 1 or 2 not like em but I'd say try a few bags. Around here we call the NY made NE pellets the "stove killers".

How/why did they get that name?

Search this forum for "NEWP" "New England Wood Pellets" " NE Pellets" etc.
Locally, its because everyone who walks into my store and says "Hey, my home deeper pellet stove dont work come fix it" and I ask them what kind of pellet they are using they tell me "Home deeper pellets" or NEWP. I tell them to clean the stove and try a good pellet and it fixes the problem.

I'm burning and sellin' the hell out of the NE coming out of NY, have not had a complaint nor bit of problem in my own stove with them. I know a few years back before we started handling them they had some trouble I guess but I must have missed getting any of those. Hope I didn't just jynx myself! lol

Balls, thats very strange. If I had a dollar for every NEWP complaint I got in here, I could afford a new motor for my boat.

They seem ashy, they tend to get caught in my auger-I hear the auger groan more than usual with them, there seems to be a bit more carbon buildup but the heat is decent.

At $219/ton I was considering them.

I wouldnt consider them for $99/ton. And for Balls, you are in business to sell them. No offense, seriously- please dont be offended. But if this forum is perpetually loaded with New england Wood Pellet dis-satisfaction, how is it possible that you are void of any complaints. Huh?

Yep True johnnycomelately about NEWP, I remember my stove was very ashy, LOTS of carbon buildup, Heat output was good. I found better results with pellets that i have tested in the past like O'malleys, Instant heat, even greenway when i first bought my stove gave me less ash and carbon buildup.

*DISCLAIMER* I sell them too.........I think every pellet has it's detractors, whether for valid reasons or not....I think everyone here, be it manufacturer, retailer, end-user have valauble information and insights to contribute. Just because Balls sells them, doesnt mean his opinion is worthless. You just have the advantage of knowing what he does for a living......we dont have that advantage for most of the folks here......

*DISCLAIMER* *I have been told I know crap about pellets and my opinion's are worthless*

Just a pellet burner here! I got lots of crap and still get some from time to time for scolding NEWP's quality. Locally they fetch pretty good coin for there pellets. More than some super premiums are getting. I just feel a mid grade pellet(IMHO NEWP's are mid range in my stove) should be priced accordingly. IMHO NEWP's quality isn't what it once was. They used to produce a pellet that was warrant of a higher price.

There is a place in the market for all brands of pellets and with that said frankly were going to need every one of them if things start to get shaky. Anyone remember the pellet shortages of the past? I do and cared more about being warm than what I was getting. I over looked quality(to a degree). I burned what I could get and afford at the time to ensure warmth. So as long as the quality is appropriate for what they are fetching for dollars. I'll shut my trap as long as there within PFI specs(if there wearing a PFI or any label with specs on the bags)!

I have always felt pellets should be priced more like gasoline. The higher the octane warrant's the higher cost. But if your burning 87 octane and paying 93 octane prices, You just haven't done your home work. *DISCLAIMER* Not saying NEWP's are 87 octane either! This is just an example of sorts to compare apples to apples! I have no means to octane rate pellets, I'll leave that to the pellet grading pro's.

Just got a ton of NEWP delivered from local hardware store, $249 delivered, they are ok, probably use them up this spring and early next year. They are a premium not SuperPremium.

Local stove shop just sent out spring buys. Pricing for current customers for month of april without delivery is...
Energex Hardwood $230
Cubex $235

I'm loading up on CUBEX!

Hope they are as good as everyone says they are.

2 weeks ago local nursery they had VTs for $245 and Barefoots $269. I don't think they do a spring buy there.

I value your opinion Jay. I'm just a newbie here but I lurked for a few weeks and read all of your tests/ reviews very informative, bottom line that I learned here is try a few bags see how they work in YOUR stove, if you like them buy more. I found a place that sells NEWP's and I will give them a try.

Thanks for the kind words Jay I'm learning

The Currans are pretty good. I have tried the blend and softwood. Softwood maybe a hair better. Smell a little weird though. I think.someone nailed it when they said crayons.

yep, all in the outlook, I guess.....Apples to apples? Folks will even aregue about the minutiae there. My girlfriend will only eat Gala apples, whereas, I really dont give a hoot, but I know Granny Smit's make the best pies and crisps.....not even all apples are equal, it just depends on your opinions!
