hey quads..ya got more snow than we did!! (good) only ended up with about 2-3" here and it pretty much melted throughout the day today

The wooden handle I put in it in December won't stay as tight as I wanted it to. Besides the wood wedge, I put three metal wedges in the handle. After splitting 20 full cord this winter, much of it below 0°F, the wedges kept trying to work their way out and I had to keep driving them back in. This Spring I put them in with Gorilla Glue and about one day of splitting and the glue all flew off. The other day I decided to go buy a new fiberglass handle, to replace the one that lasted for the better part of 30 years. But when I got to Tractor Supply, the fiberglass handles cost nearly as much as a whole new 6#. And this 6# is the closest to the same shape as the old 'Archibald Fiskars' as I have ever seen. So my 40 year old favorite is for now getting a well-deserved rest on the garage wall while I run this new one through it's paces. Works very well so far and gets better everyday, with use. Gettin' her really shined up and dulled down, splitting on the first swing almost every time. Doesn't feel quite as balanced as the oldie, the new one has a little club-like/top-heavy feel, but it could be because the handle on the new one is lighter.wood dope said:

HA! The back tires are in good shape yet......compared to the fronts! The front tires have almost no tread, can see the air in them. I rigged up an old pair of tire chains on the back this winter, but have already took them off for Spring....? Was thinking about getting new front tires before next winter, but maybe I will buy a whole new ATV with what I made selling wood in the last few months. Maybe.Flavo said:

When I saw the snow on radar I figured you'd get a decent amount but am surprised you got more than yooperdave. We had the ground white 3 different days but it did not take too long to melt off. Today is beautiful but more rain expected.

We got about a foot overnight a couple days ago... then it got down to -3 °F the next night.. then we got another 5" of fresh snow last night, & now they're predicting another 8-18" by Friday evening! Gotta love springtime in Montana's mountains... lol
Maybe I'll be able to get out & start cutting some firewood by June

Nope, my arms aren't skinny, and neither is the rest of me! HA!
The neighbor built the 'tower' in the picture for hunting. There is a small field on the other side, just for the deer (the pond is just for the deer too, man-made).
You can try epoxy billb3, maybe it will keep the handle tight, but I think the expanding and contracting the wood does when the temperature changes will give you problems eventually anyway. That's why I was going back to fiberglass, I just couldn't keep it as tight as I wanted it. Tighten it one day, temperature changes, split a couple cord, loose again the next day.
Was 25° this morning, but up to 53° already at noon. Rain forecast for the next day or two.

I've got an 8-pounder with a fiberglass handle. I'm half-thinking about taking the angle grinder/flap disc to it and paring down to about 6 pounds...

Ya, 8 pound is too heavy for me, can't swing it like I want to. 6 pound is just right. But not any 6 pound, it has to have that flare to the 'cutting' edge. The blunt-looking 6 pound don't split as well for me.Woody Stover said:Ahhh, another beautiful Spring day in WI.
