My wife decided to get me a Fiskars for Easter...and who am I to reject her generosity? So I now have a 28" Super Splitting Axe waiting for me for tomorrow. Problem is, I'm not sure its the one I want. The only place that sells them is Sears, or we go online...this is the biggest Fiskars Sears sells and after looking around I found out its the old style, longest version of the short handled axe. They do not sell the X-Series cutting tools at my local Sears, this is the 7859.

Question I have is, is this one I'm going to like or should we return it unopened and go to Amazon for the longer handed versions? I always split on a stump or short round so I hit the round at a bit below waist height, I'm concerned with the short handle about taking it in the shin when it bounces off the top on the first strike...though since its technically an axe, not a maul perhaps this is not a significant risk.

Fiskars owners, speak your minds.

If you read any of the reviews for the x27 on amazon, everyone that has had both says they got it right w/ the x27. I only have the x27 so I don't have a real opinion of value. All the reading I did on it here and amazon would say w/ out a doubt to return it and get the longer one.

The Fiskars #7859 is the 28" PRO Splitting Axe. Fiskars #7854 is the 28" SUPER Splitting Axe. If you want a 28" model, then get the heavier SUPER (or the newer Fiskars X25 Splitting axe). If you have a Walmart nearby, they should have the X25 by now.

If you want 36" length, then get the X27 online or order form a local store that carries Fiskars products.

I own all three (Pro, Super, and X27), and I think I like the length on the X27 a little better than the Super.

So I ought to return the one I have and get the X27 is what I'm getting out of this, right?

Wal Mart doesn't carry Fiskars axes around here, scissors, loppers, bypass pruners and all that, yes.

Thanks!

Have you checked within the past month? It's a new item in their regular stock.

Definitely return the 2.25 lb PRO axe. Get the original 4.25 lb #7854 or the 4.09 lb X25 or the longer handled X27.

Haven't gone looking for one at wally world, but they don't list them as for sale on the website, so I never bothered. I'll check it out and return the one I've got. Worth the extra $15 to get the right one.

All the websites where I have found a reference to the X27 lists them as web only purchase (Home Depot) or out of stock (Amazon). Surprisingly hard to find tools for something thats been out for awhile.

I've see the x25 in Wallyworld, along with some of the hatchets, etc.,. I haven't seen the x27 yet, though. Look in the garden section...even seen them outside in the fenced plant area.

I have the old #7854 28in "Super Splitting axe" and the new x27. The old style head on the 7854 works better for me. I try to do most of my splitting on a stump inside of a tire so the short length doesn't bother me. If I have to work some rounds on the ground I'll just throw a tire over them to keep the edge sharp and protect my toes. For this I use a tire that came off of a BMW M3. It's very light and easy to carry from round to round.

What?? Our wives are supposed to be getting us wood stuff for Easter?!! Well, mine has got a lot of missed Easters to make up for!

I just got the X27 because it's about the same length as my other splitting ax. And more length is more speed.

I bought the x27 on amazon for 49.37 with free shipping. It should be here on 4-25-11. It will be my first ax, I hope it serves me well.

Rural Walmarts in central Illinois have the X-25 but it is buried under the axe display in ours on the floor. Have to look to find them. I think $39.95. Great tool or atleast the 7854 it replaced is.

Same here. At the two stores nearest me, it's in a display box flat on the floor and not with the vertically hanging tools.

I bought a X25 at my local walmart, I couldn't find a price on it when I went to buy it, but I took it anyway from the way you guys talk about it on here!

when i got to the register, there was no upc on it, so they had to go price check it.
Girl said it was $23.97

Sooo that's what I paid.
Cut 2 face cords of really, really knotty pine later that night in about an hour and a half with no problems.
Was about 25 degrees out and snowing... I was sweating my butt off, but I was working pretty quickly so I guess that was to be expected ;d

After an extensive local search (because I want to support my local businesses and help keep my neighbors employed) I've determined that not one single local place sells the X27 or can even find a reference to it from their distributors. Went to Amazon and picked one up this mronign along with the sharpening tool to keep it honed at the recommended angle. $60 total shipped to my door.

Thanks for everyone's input.

No such animal in my region. Nearest is at least an hour's drive one way. We have True Value, they can special order the X25, but not the X27. Nobody actually carrys the X models on the store around here, only the old style...ad they don't sell at all because they all put them on the rack right next the yellow handled splitting tools that cost 2/3 what the fiskars tools cost.

Free shipping $49.99 and $9.99 for sharpener.. Love it.

$50 is big coin for a maul, clost to double the cost of a good qualtiy old fashioned maul with a lifetime warrantied fiberglass handle...I'm expecting the world out of this thing.
