Had an oil delivery today of 190 gallons- just short of double what I normally receive when the stove is going.

Decomissioned the Vigilant a couple of months ago and my family misses her, but there will soon be a new woman in my life- the Jotul F600- cannot wait to welcome her into the family so we can cozy up together....and I can once again save some money.

Whats the per gallon damage in your area? 3.69 around here... only know that because my brother was complaing he had to fill the tank :)

Oil at 3.99/gallon. 3.79 with early payment. Splitting and stacking this weekend for the coming winter and cannot wait to fire that 600 up!

The prices are getting crazy. Hard to believe it costs almost 1000 dollars to fill a 275 gallon tank from an 1/8th of a tank... unreal. My brother heats 24/7 with wood, but heats his HW with oil and finding its getting expensive to maintain boiler temp with oil, he's thinking of electric instead. All i can say is happy burning... and enjoy your jotul 600 next season its a great stove.

When the stove is going here it is pretty much just hot water heat and heat for one 300 sq ft room above the garage on oil. Going to add in more insulation this year and am hoping an OAK on the new stove will help with draft in the house.

You're so right. It really is at the point where electric is competitive with oil. Honest to God, I'd be bankrupt if I still had to heat with oil. I do use a couple hundred gallons in a year because my little stove doesn't burn long enough to keep the temp from dropping dangerously low overnight for the pipes in winter and the oil burner has to come on for a while, but though the tank is nearly empty now, I'm hoping I won't need anymore this year and can wait until the price goes down a bit before getting in some more. But if these prices keep up, it would be cheaper to buy a bigger stove than just to fill the tank once.

I switched from the "hot water on demand" attached to my oil boiler a couple years ago to an electric heater, and it's worked out to be a lot less expensive to run. It makes some sense in the coldest months, but it was infuriating to hear that money-burner in the basement come on all summer just to heat the water.

Our last delivery in March was 4.93/gallon - central NY. Which is why we are getting a wood stove this year :) Sure hope it will cut down on our oil usage dramatically...

I just told my husband the other day that we have to convert over to an electric hot water heater....when I hear that oil furnace turn on....I freakin cringe...the other day....when the husband was makin coffee....he immediately stopped.....and said do you hear that? Gamma Ray- would have to agree that divorcing your arse would be a consideration hearing a line like that :) But, I suppose he is never bored

I can be demanding.....but Mr Gamma always has home cooked food, clean clothes, and a super clean house and most importantly....a wood stove that is always rockin and rollin when he comes home from work....so he does not have to lift a log for many hours...

Hey Hollow, CNY here also. I can guess from your price your using Suburban for you oil. They charge about a dollar more per gallon than everyone else. Our company is at 3.73 per gallon cash price. Still not cheap.

Remi - sure will be nice to get the F600 in - would love to see it in action next winter!

I'm in the same boat as some others - I was able to heat our 3000sqft comfortably with 100% wood this winter, but hearing the oil kick on to keep the tank of hot water at temp was painful. We used about 150gal since mid-Oct for DHW. Trying to figure out if electric would be a better option - would save ~ $120/year right away from not servicing the burner. Just not sure if the electric cost would be so close to oil as to make the move unnecessary. Good luck w/ the new stove! Cheers, Jacques

That is amazing for the price of oil. The last time we bought any fuel oil it was somewhere around $.50 per gallon. When we got married, the price was $.12 per gallon. How the times change...

Jacques, door is always open to you....come on over and we will set up some chairs in the basement, grab some drinks and watch the secondaries burn! Maybe a game of darts while we are at it.

Thanks, Franks for the info. I was beginning to get that sneaking suspicion. Unfortunately, we are on their budget plan and have 4 more months of hefty payments left. But once that is done, so are we with Suburban.

150 gal, at $4 a gallon, so $600 for 6 months. That's about what I spend all year now for hot water, that's with 2 adults and 4 kids! My house has always been electric hot water, but in december I switched my OLD (1983) electric water heater out for a new GE GeoSmart heat pump water heater. Went from spending about $100/ month on electricity for DHW to $60. The unit is expensive I paid $1400 on sale at Lowes, but the tax rebate hleped bring the price down. Between that and my savings it'll basically be equal to a new standard water heater this year and have completely paid for itself in just over 2. Plus it dehumidifies my basement!

Sounds like I need to start looking into the electric units! I paid 2.59/gal in October, so not too bad (about $70/month for hot water). But, as long as oil stays this high, that $/month won't last long. Cheers!

Yeah this unit ends up being about equal in operating cost to a natural gas water heater. However I, like many of us on here don't have access to NG so this was my best option. Not to mention they don't even sell oil burning waterheaters anywhere around here. In S.E. Michigan I'm definately in the minority being an oil burner, most are on NG then Propane where NG's not availible. My wood stove definately paid off this year though. I used about 300 gallons of oil all winter, from what I can find the previous owners where using between 1,000-1,200 gallons a year before! Hopefully with some tweaks to my set up I can use even less next winter. At the rate I burn though I'll have enough oil in my tank to last me all of next winter. By then hopefully I'll have saved up enough to put in a GEO Thermal system.
