I put in a new water heater myself in December. It is power vented approx 30ft horizontal with 3" PVC. The power vent blower has a 3" outlet, but only came with a 2" reducing coupler. Not wanting to reduce to 2" then increase back to 3" I went looking for the straight coupler. Of course Home Depot has no clue what I am talking about, but I found a 3" PVC repair rubber connector, so it worked for the time being.

The 2" reduction collar has a fitting to connect an optional condensate drain, as well as the 3" straight fitting if I can find a place to buy it.

Does anyone have any experience doing this on a hot water heater. From what I can find online this would be very uncommon. With the 30' power vent though it seems like I could be getting some condensate draining back to the heater. I have a theory that this may have contributed to why the tank failed after only 10 years on the old heater. The flue baffle system was very nasty looking on the old heater when I got the power vent motor off the top of it. Maybe some condensate was getting down to the bottom of the tank area and causing corrosion on the outside, while the fact it had no anode was not helping any on the inside.

Should I investigate getting the correct coupler and condensate drain kit, or I am just waiting my time worrying about it?

I am an electrician and not a plumber.

However every time i see a new powervent water heater installed they are pitched slightly to let any condensate drain to the outside.

I think I saw that in the instructions for the tankless heaters, the one I have which is a B-vent style, power vented, shows to have a slight rise on the vent run.

Collect the condensate and make ice. Should be nice and clear.

.... and toxic
