Looks like a Jotul Firelight F600, though if it is older it might be the cat version. From what I have read, both are very good stoves.

My opinion is - it is very hard to go wrong with a Jotul F500 Oslo or the F600 Firelight if in good shape.

Check out the stove and let us know what you decide - you might get more $$$'s off the price since spring is here and warm weather is on us.

It does look like the F600 but was made in 1992.. Is this cat or non-cat?

Ray

OOps this stove was made in 2002 NOT 1992.. Sorry about that!

I agree with leeave, could be a firelight 600 or a castine 400. Money looks good, although a thorough check is in order before you spend any dough. Check for cracks in the cast, the burn plates and the secondary burn tubes just to name a few items. off season price may attract some other folks like yourself. Good luck

I think it its a Firelight, A few years ago it was there biggest stove, top loader, with a cat. From the picture, I think its the newer version, side door and no cat. If it's in nice shape I think it's a good deal for a top of the line pricey stove.

I emailed and was told that it's a Firelight but
no other details.. I don't know if this is a cat or non-cat...

I just bought a new F600- not familiar with the old models, but have yet to hear of someone complaining about them.....as mentioned earlier, a thorough inspection is needed but the price seems good.

Remkel could you tell me what it costs for this stove new?

Thanx,
Ray

Good luck on it Ray. Wish I could help but can't. Sorry.

Ray, The top loader / cat version had a foot pedel to open the top, don't see it in the picture. That version was being made 10 years ago when I bought the Oslo. The newer version may not be much more than 5 years old. I haven't priced them in years but I guess 2000, 2500. Lets see what Remkel paid.

I noticed the foot pedal thing too xman and it makes me think this is the F600 Firelight..

No problem, Ray. I paid 2100 for the F600 before including installations costs, which I anticipate to be around $200. I am so looking forward to it's arrival within the next couple of weeks. New liner was installed last week and it is such a tease looking at that empty thimble through the wall.

I just glanced at some of the reviews of the F600 on this site and they show prices too. I think a new one is going to be pretty much north of $2,000. For some reason, I can't explain, I really hadn't considered the Jutol F500-600 stoves prior to buying my Englander. I saw an Oslo at a dealer later and was very impressed and have since been reading a lot about these stoves. I come away, as I do with the PE and Hearthstone soapstones, with a very high opinion of these Jotul stoves.

If the Jotul you are looking at is not damaged or if it just needs some normal wear parts, you may have a very good deal on you hands.

Good luck,
Bill

It's a non cat F600.. you can tell becuz the removable handle is stuck in the side load door.. if it was a CAT unit, then there is no side door (they only made CAT units top load). This is the previous non-cat version of the current production: only differences is the side load door on the current version has a fixed side door handle... the removable handle now only works the front door... and the newer version has a handle on the ashpan.. this older noncat version in the ad has a chrome loop that a seperate ashpan handle inserted into to open the ashpan door.

I did quite a bit of research before making my purchase and could not find a negative review of the F600- and believe me I looked hard. When I finally went to the stove shop to look at one in person, I was extremely impressed not only with the aesthetics of the stove, but also the very obvious quality of the build. the other thing i liked about the stove is it is a MONSTER! What a huge firebox, and just the little extra I am going to need to heat the rest of my house.

I almost feel a little ashamed that this will be in my basement, but I am picturing a recliner and small table set up down there where I can escape to watch the secondaries go!

That's about right I paid 2300 for my 550 insert. And dammit, now I think I know who Remkel really is... Clues to follow.

Yes, and now I know who the fine senator from RI is.......enjoy the day, cuz!!!!

Summit very good detective work. I didn't know of the older F600 non cat before the cat version. So I know the cat was made 10 years ago, so this stove is older than that. But it's a Jotel, if it hasn't been over fired it can be a real nice stove. My Oslo is now 10 years old, and I haven't done a thing to it, and it's as good as new.

Yes you're right and the CB denotes Clean Burn (secondary burn) and applies to the non-cat version.. I have read that the cat version is more troublesome with this stove .. Is it possible to add a blower to this stove to get some convection heat? Has anyone done this and how effective is it in reducing the radiant heat?

Ray

Ray,

There is a blower kit for the F600, however, based on the comments on the F500 Olso, it sounds like no one really used them, but maybe a small box fan to move some air around.

Good luck,
Bill

From what I have seen, people do not tend to get the blower kit with this stove right off the bat. There is a blower kit, but it is a bit pricey and you may want to give the stove a shot without it for a while. If the need for a blower arises, I would take Bill's advice and use a box fan. OR, you could always add the blower kit later.

xman how warm is it sitting in the same room with your stove? I am concerned about it getting too warm or does the heat tend to be uniform? Do you use a fan to move the air and does this help reduce the effects of radiant heat? I am used to convection heat and wonder what I can expect with this radiant stove..

Thanx,

Well I got an email and the Jotul was sold before I could get there to see it (I planned on going there today my 1st day off after 3 12 hr. days) :( Guess it wasn't meant to be.. Sooo it's back to the drawing board.. After reading about the Alderlea stoves cracking in the firebox I am now reconsidering the Woodstock stoves and I read every review here and they get rave reviews from everyone.. Gotta "convince" my wife that they have a great reputation but she isn't crazy about the looks of them.. If I were to win one that would certainly convince her lol.. Look forward to seeing Woodstock's newest stove as I feel it would give more firepower and keep up with the heatload needs here..

Ray,
Hope it wasn't one of our buddies here that beat you to the stove. I admit I did look-up the address. That looked like a nice stove. So about my Oslo, it heats my place with plenty of heat to spare even on the coldest nights. The house is chalet with cathedral ceilings and a open floor plan. The room with the stove is a bit warmer than the back bedrooms, but not by much.

Are you looking to replace what you have with something bigger?

Hi Tom,
Yes a bit bigger would give me a little headroom for the colder periods.. To me reliability is very important.. I prefer to pay extra for a stove that just runs 24/7 with minimal parts if any.. I am very used to that and I like it that way.. The reason I want to replace this stove is that some parts are not available anymore and that would be a problem if it died in the middle of winter.. I would expect perhaps a little less wood usage but not a lot less as this stove is pretty efficient for one so old.. I really like convection but the offerings are slim and woodstock seems like it would not blast me out of the room that the stove lives in.. Jotul appears to make a great product but I feel the burn times of a cat stove should be longer.. Man this will not be an easy decision!!! This forum is fantastic with so many so willing to give great advice.. I know that here I am welcome and will get good advice no matter my choice...
