My neighbor and I got started on the giant ash tree yesterday. I got there at 9am and he had already cut the tree into the 16' pieces as I had marked it! I was stunned but he said he was bored on Thursday and had a ball cutting it to size. He also said he really liked having it marked because it saved a bunch of time.

We split for 3 hours and got all but one of the big rounds split (had to quit because of rain). It was great, he pulled his trailer right next to the splitter and as we split we tossed it onto the trailer then we took the trailer to my place were we tossed the wood into the driveway. Then my oldest daughter helped by tossing wood into our lawn trailer and drove it back to the stacks where I built my wall. She asked if I wanted her to help stack and I told he that I would be fine and this way if it fell I could only be mad at myself.....well half the stack tumbled and I had to re-stack :shut: . She sat and texted her friend while I was stacking :smirk: . I had a great time with my friend and my daughter. I'm only a little sore today but it was a great day.

This haul was almost a full cord and we're going to hit it again Saturday. I'll post some pics soon.

Always a good time when friends, and family are involved ! My little girl loves to help me "make sticks" as she calls it. I usually can talk the Wife into helping me stack most of the time. Looking forward to the pictures !

Good to hear you got that ash. Your daughter hopefully will learn but I thought that about my wife too. Now I will not let her help stack! I don't like restacking nor do I like sloppy looking stacks.

I know what you mean about neat stacks! My previous stacks were cut by someone else so they are various lengths and thicknesses, which make it really hard to stack and look decent. The ash was soooo much easier to make a nice looking stack with wood cut and split the same. It also made stacking VERY easy.

The portion of the stack that fell was sitting on top of smaller round sticks and that made the top slide right off. Looked like dominoes!

Even w/ the fall, sounds like a good day.

I suggest Jezynowka (Leroux brand Blackberry Brandy for the Polish taste) for the soreness / stiffness.

Use it straight chilled or else chilled mixed 50/50 w/ black velvet for "polish velvet."

:)

Here are my stacks!

The light colored stacks are the ash from this weekend and the darker stacks are a mix of beech, oak, hickory, and stuff I can't tell from the pile left when we bought the house.

You can really see the lean in this pic!

This one is hickory and oak I had delivered last winter.

May just be that angle of the shot, but it looks like the ash on the right is leaning a bit.....nice score though!

thanks!

Oh yeah, it's leaning and going more everyday. I figure I'll have to sure up with supports or re-stack. I'm thinking I might shorten the stack to take some weight off the top and save the hassle later on.

Where do you guys get those green poles I see you guys using to stack wood?

Tractor Supply has T posts. Sometimes in the early Spring you can get the ones that have been sitting out for 1/3 the price.

Random thoughts . . .

Never could figure out the purpose of T-posts . . . I tend to just cross stack at the ends which seems to work just fine . . . sometimes I end up putting a stack up between two large trees . . . but usually I stick with the cross stack . . . is there an advantage to the T-posts?

Then again . . . my wood piles will not win any awards or be on any posters . . . especially since the top has all the punks, chunks and uglies . . . but truth be told . . . doesn't matter to me . . . as long as the stack stays up, dries and is good to burn when I need the wood for heat.

There are two different types of T posts you can buy. I don't know the exact terminology for them, but there is a heavy duty (field fencing) type, and a light duty (garden fencing type). I find the light duty ones to be good for stacking wood. You will have some deflection with the light duty ones but they are serving me well....and they are much cheaper.

Any farm store will have them. The heavy posts, used by farmers for fencing, are called T-posts. I am using the light duty ones which are called U-posts. I am trying to not use them on the ends by cross stacking but since I am still learning I use them. I am using them on the sides when the stacks start to lean....which is most of my stacks right now :red: .

All of mine were with the house when we moved in. The previous owner used them for everything!

For what you guys are using them for I would not recommend getting the 7' or 8' posts as you don't need any that tall so why pay the price? Better yet, learn how to stack the ends and save those dollars you would have to spend on t-posts.

I use pallets, they are free.
