I'm at the last 10% of my pellet stove install and need some advice on siding around the exhaust pipe. Below is a pic of the pipe and also the shield that i was told by the installer to put over the siding.

my question is, do i just J-channel around the vent, then slide over the shield, screw into siding and silicon the holes drilled into the siding? Or am i missing something?

Thanks!

If you don't get a reasonable answer tonight I will try to get a photo of my outside pipe tomorrow in the daylight so you can see just how my installer did mine.
My install was over the existing vinyl siding and then the edges were sealed with silicon.
That would make it a lot easier than trying fit the siding around afterward like your attempting to do. I thought it came out pretty good.

I have almost the identical installation. I J channeled around the plate, siliconed the cr*p out of it, making sure no water could sneak in anywhere and I've been good to go ever since. Two years, no problems.

I will also try to get a picture tomorrow and post it. My plate is a bit smaller.

vintageagain here are some photos as promised.

I can't tell from my pictures where the second plate you have pictured on the right in your original post is.

I tried to take a few pictures to show how it looks overall and some close ups of how the installer applied the caulking.
Don't knpw what he used for caulking but it the best stuff I have ever seen. It has never discolored or cracked.
It was installed two years ago this summer and have had no issues.

Hope these help.

thanks! that helps a lot. the installer told me to side around what i have in the left picture, then slide the square part over and screw to the siding. now i know to silicon around that completely. i guess j-channeling around what is there now will just add to water protection too with the square part over the j-channel.

I just uploaded the pics onto the computer then tried to post them. Stoopid me, they're too big. Forgot to select a smaller size when I took them. It really doesn't matter, my installation looks exactly like Smalltowns. Same plate, pipe and termination cap.

OP, Is that thing 24" below the vented vinyl soffit?

To the OP.. The set of pics that "smalltown" put up is good. But can be better. If you cut the siding in a "Square", there will be smaller gaps to fill in with silicone. The hole in his was a "Circle" and the Main part of the thimble was resting against the siding itself. You can see on the sides where the silicone goes from thin to thick (Pic #4 to the right) with the angle of the siding. Cut the siding the same size "Square" as the Thimble and it will sit "Flush" inside the siding and your silicone bead will be the same size around 100% of the thimble.

As for the other plate. That's designed to protect your siding from "Soot". My vent terminates at 14" from the house. Yours is def much further than mine.... So... If your stove is burning good. And you followed the clearance to combustibles for the PL Vent (summit made a comment about 24" from soffit? looks close) and the EVL per Manf recommendations..... You should have zero problems. I would take the plate back and put that money toward some pellets for this coming season.

P.S.-----What kind of stove are you installing?? Put it in your Signature, so we can further help and recognize you. Oh Yeah, and.......... We "LOVE" Pics of stoves.... When there Burning.

summit: from the top of the pipe to the bottom of the soffit is 22.5 inches, is 24 inches the minimum?

the soffit is for the "dog house" bump out off the back of my house on the first level, if that makes a difference. The second story is indented on the first floor.

DexterDay: Just got the Quadrafire Mt Vernon AE Insert with Cast Trim installed, well sorta. The installers put it in and ran the pipe. I did the tear out of the propane zc direct vent (got every piece in the basement if anyone is interested), reframed inside, added a boat load of insulation and now that i had my final inspection i'm closing up the drywall then putting back the same granite facing and mantel. Will get some pics when i get home.

i'm going for the 'prettiest' way to button up the vent so it sounds like i'm going to J-Channel around the thimble, silicon (mildew resistant type) between the thimble and the J-Channel, then cut my siding to fit between the existing pieces, corners, and J-channel.
