Had a 18" tree blow over on my property last night and take two small Buckeye trees with it (good riddance). Anyways I am pretty sure that it is some sort of Ash (maybe Green Ash). What do you guys think? I am dreading getting to this tree as it's in a steep ravine on a part of the property I usually avoid working. I might be investing in a winch to get this one or a lot more chain. I can post pics of the tree later tonight.

+1 All but 4 tress I have are green ash.

Well then, I guess I officially have about 5 or 6 green ash trees on my property that are alive and doing well.

Smokin, I'm pretty sure I have heard you talk about using winches to pull trees before...Any recommendations on what size winch I should be looking for if I decide to go that way?

I milled one yesterday I thought it was perfect, but after opening it up it clearly had damage. Was not bad but they where there.

That's a bummer. When I get around to the one that fell I will pay close attention to it to see how it looks. Might not be until this fall though as I'm pretty much done with the wood processing for this summer.

I was very amaze that there where no signs of them what so ever when I felled it over 1-1/2 ago. Gf was wanting a cloths line and I thought opening up the ash and use it if there was damage. I will have an ash cloths line.lol

I think that leaf looks way more like hickory to me than ash.

Does your tree have alternate or opposite branching? so, where you pulled this compound leaf from, was there another growing absolutly directly opposite from it in the other side of the stem? ash has opposite branching and hickory has alternate

your leaf looks like pignut hickory - with 5 leaflets it could also be shagbark, but those leaflets are usually bigger looking - though variable.

Those leafs are to skinney and jagged for any shagbark around my area. Not sure what pignut looks like.

Around here, those leaves could pass for shagbark or pignut hickory. Give us a picture of the bark and we can settle the issue for sure. Z

I just flipped a pig over and I see no resemblance at all!

I was just out and looked at my shagbark hickery in the yard and the leaves are jagged like that and the same configuration only much wider. Older tree ?

yeah, that's why I guessed pignut - but mentioned shagbark as it also has 5 leaflets. mockernut usually has 7 leaflets, bitternut has at least 7, often more.

ash leaves usually have 7 leaflets and they have a different 'look' . Their leaflets are more lance shaped and often have a little stem of their own coming off the main 'stem'.

haha, I'm an idiot,

sorry - i just looked at the picture again and that leaf does have 7 leaflets - wow, I can count good. well, could still be pignut, but they usually only have 5 leaflets - could be mockernut. is the stem of that leaf very fuzzy??? mockernut hickory leafs have very fuzzy stems. if its not fuzzy it could be red hickory which is sometimes classified as a subspecies of pignut hickory, but usually has 7 leaflets. pignut and red hickory always have smooth stems.

either way, I'm sure its hickory - they all burn the same as far as I can tell - GOOD - and you'll know if you cut one up - heavy as crap

Known ash tree.

yeah, thats an ash leaf - number of leaflets can definitely vary - so if a species usually has 7 leaflets, any individual leaf could easily have 5 to 9.

your leaf posted looks like an ash leaf

at least to me the leaf posted by the original poster looks like a hickory.

i could be wrong :)

I definitely don't think it's Hickory or at least any hickory I have ever seen around here. Here is a couple of pictures of the tree.

definitely ash

Definitely hickory!!

hahaha,

just look at the branching pattern and see if it has opposite branching or alternate branching - or post a picture of the end of a branch that shows several leaves coming off. that will settle this definitively.
