How do you guys stack the little chunks and odd pieces? The score I got a couple of weeks ago has a bunch of little (6"ish) pieces that are thick and will be great for small fires, kindling etc. What I am doing right now is separating the long lengths from medium/small as I pull the wood off the trailer and making to stacks (one long 16" and one medium lengths 12") but I still have a pile of chunks. I plan on putting the chunks on the top of the finished stacks but wanted to know if there was a better way.

Thanks!

Fireview, great question. I'm eventually going to build a "Chunk Box" out of pallets to hold those.

Smaller stuff and "uglies" I don't want to split go on top of my stacks just as you are doing. I see no reason not to.....

That's what I do, pallet chunk box. Mine is 3 pallets wide, 2 pallets deep, pallets stood up on sides and rear, front stays open

I throw them on top of the stacks too.
I also use then to hold the top covers on the piles.

I toss them to the side of the heap when splitting. They go directly from there into the stove when the heap isn't buried in snow.

I stack on pallets. Two rows with a big gap between. I toss smallish uglies, end cuts, smaller sticks into the gap between the rows. Separate pallet of big chunks and uglies that I don't want to split by hand. That stack is for my "one of these days" when I finally buy a splitter.

I don't get too many chunks and uglies so I don't really have a need for a bin. The small stuff goes in my kindling boxes and the large chunks etc just get stacked on the top row of the stacks.

One thing I'll admit to. As my stash gets bigger and bigger - I'm probably going to get more picky. When I'm cutting in the field I'm starting to just toss knots and uglies off the side and leave them there.

Great idea on the bin! I think I'll be making one in the future. All of the pieces I have right now are from my scrounging, we didn't have any from the ash tree we cut up.

I had two "pallet boxes" full of them but just dissassembled them because I didn't like the look in my back yard. I am in town with neighbors who like things neat looking so I resloved myself to just having a 121' long x 2 rows deep stack of stove length firewood along the back of the property. Now when I get the shorties/oddballs I leave them at the cutting site unless they are premium wood like oak or locust. Those I toss in plastic totes, throw them in my storage shed and the hot summer temps inside the shed season them in short order.

I take anything that does not look like regular firewood and toss it over the fence for my neighbor to use for campfire wood. :) That way he thinks I am a good neighbor, and I have very nice looking stacks of wood. I also give the odd balls-n-uglies to people who need wood, but will not work for it. ;-)

I have a neighbor like that, gave them plenty of wood over the years.. then one night they helped themselves to my premium stuff with out asking.
After two weeks and them not fessing up until I brought it up I decided a 6' fence between us and them was in order. Now I like to have huge firepit fires with those uglies while they have to run over to the gas station and pay $5 for a few sticks ;-)

Only been scrounging for about 2 months and gave my buddy from work a Truck Load (6 ft short bed Chevy/Level bed). Gave him all my "Scraps/Uglies" and he was very thankful. He said something at work and I said "if you come get it, you can have it". After he got loaded up. He quickly returned with a 30-pack of Ice cold Adult beverages. I did not expect it, but I took it. That wood will last him probably 3 years in his back-yard fire-pit. He will be forever thankful. . . . . . And the Next time I will charge him $75 like everyone else.... LOL... Just kidding.

On a scrounge, You cant be picky. Have had the same guy call me back 3 times now. Just cause I take EVERYTHING.. Beggar's cant be choosers. I like Free. Picked up 2 loads today (one pine/ other Maple and Birch). Been on vacation. Go back June 13th...I Have 2 loads lined up for tomorrow, 2nd load of Pine (same house) and another load that a Guy is bringing to me (Mystery Wood) But its Free... I love it.. Pic attached. Some small. Some Big. This was a "Good Load". Had to take away brush a couple times.

Last weekend I nailed welded wire to a pallet to form a basket an filled it up with chunks. Same way you see rock at a rock yard. Now theyre in the sun and gettin air.

I stack two rows on the outside edges of 4' wide pallets and throw the shorts and uglies in the space between the rows. I figure I'll want the shorts and uglies for rebuilding fires at about the same rate I'm burning the main stack...

If you make a Holtz Hauzen you can throw them in the middle. Otherwise I stack em 2 deep in my pallet rows.

What I do with my chunks, punks and uglies . . .

1. Throw them on top of the regular stack
2. Throw them in the center of my Holz Miete
3. Save them for my campfires
4. Keep a separate pile which I use for burning in the Fall when I don't need to stuff the woodstove right to the gills
